GW is releasing two new artificer brushes. Size M and S.
I like the XS Artificer so I'm looking forward to trying these two out as well.

For $26 a pop you can buy much better brushes for about $10+ cheaper.
That price tag is ridiculous, then again its GW.

Yeah this. The last round of GW brushes were very nice, and I'm certain these will be excellent, but you can get WN series 7 brushes for cheaper and they are really top quality.

We had a golden demon panter come in a teach a painting class and me and the store owners fiancé were more impressed with the Winsor Newton brush then his models lol.
I actually just ordered the 2 round and waiting eagerly for it :3

It's pretty much always the case that any tool released by Games Workshop will be both inferior and yet more expensive than from elsewhere.
You're paying the GW tax.

The only reason I'll buy them is because I can see them personally. I haven't found anyplace here in Houston selling W&N Series 7's (but then again I haven't looked too hard). I don't want to buy them online because I like to look at the brush before I buy it.

If you buy a W&N S7, and do not think it is as good as a Citadel brush, I am certain you will be able to sell the W&N to someone else here. They're the Rolls Royce of brushes, Citadel is the Hyundai

Jerry's Artarama in Houston has them as well as as their own brand which I have used and like.

I buy all my brushes online and haven't had a bad W&N or Rosemary & co. one yet. When you buy brands that have an extensive history of top quality merchandise, it's a fairly safe assumption that the goods will be ok even sight unseen.

You could buy a Raphael 8404 size 0 for a lot less than those Citadel brushes and they'd probably perform as well or better.
On the other hand at least Citadel are finally offering quality brushes to tabletop gamers who may not know about all the other brands out there. If it leads to them paying more for these and realizing how much difference there is between a quality Kolinsky-Sable and a cheap or synthetic brush they may then be encouraged to seek out brands like W&N, Da Vinci, Raphael, Rosemary & Co and so on.

My last few R&Co's have been pretty piss-poor. I've not tried W&N yet because of the pricetag, but I think I'll have to bite the bullet.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

What did you buy? I use 33 series for detail and 98 series for rough work (basecoats etc.) and I don't exactly have a wide sample as I've not needed to buy many, but I've never had any issues and yours is genuinely the first negative comment I've read about their brushes. Sorry you've had a bad experience.

Allegedly the new brushes are rebranded w&n s7 anyway, albeit more expensive.

looking before buying? i suppose there is merit to that but what are you looking at? you cant see the brushes ability to hold a point or how it feels when you use it. series 7 brushes are amazing and i'll never go back to anything else

i cant fathom needing more than 2 1 and 0. unless you are doing something insane in which case you know exactly what you need. know what i mean?
2 = good for troop size base coats etc.
1 = most of detail work
0 = freehand
for me at least

I actually find 2 a little too big for basecoating infantry models, so I use a less expensive size 1 for that task (Rosemary & co. 98 series).
1 will do you for most stuff, even most detail work if you take care of it and keep the point.
0 is useful to have on hand for fine details. You might occasionally find need for a 00 to do things like eyes.
As a UK resident I'd say look at Rosemary & co. 33 series instead of W&N. Very, very similar in terms of quality, but much, much cheaper.

33s. I own two of all of them from the smallest up to an including size 2, and also a size 3 and 4. The first lot I got a few years back were fine except the 4, which refused to hold a point. The new set I got about 2 months ago all refuse to hold points, have already got erratic hairs, and the size 3 literally opened up like a flower not a few minutes into its first use:
No amount of brush care has worked on them, even Masters brush soap. Fortunately, the old ones are still good enough for detail work, but I currently use GW's own Citadel brushes for anything larger, which are working much better. If I need replacements, I'll look to W&N before R&Co. in future.

I bought one of the new citadel brushes, because I had a need for a new basecoat one and because I had fond memories of my first citadel basecoat brush. IMO the new brush is CRAP. It didn't even last as long, with care, as one of my cheap brushes of the same size. Too much money, not nearly enough quality. Bit incidentally, the handle is cheap seeming plastic, not the nicer wood(?) of the older one. Made me sad :(
I looked at the artficer, looked at the price, and laughed. I like to support my LGS (and they're selling just about all the citadel brushes) but I ain't touchin' that one. Not with my baby W&N7 here... sooo much better.
