Hey all, I currently play CSM and KDK and sometimes tyranids, was thinking of starting Orks because they look so damn cool, but going over their rules it seems like I'm picking a terrible army. My opponents are generally necrons and Eldar. Would I have a chance to have fun with them or would I just get tabled over and over?

If your opponents aren't playing casual lists Orks will get wrecked by Necrons and Eldar. They can still be entertaining, but if you want good games against those armies I'd stay away from the greenskins.

I'm not even sure the Eldar are capable of casual lists lol! Necron player does decurion, but the scariest things he has are wraiths and a boat load of warriors and 2 monoliths.

If he is doing a decurion, you will not have fun against him with orks imo. You need something that can burst his groups down in 1 turn, and his rapid fire will spread your cheeks.

orks are fun if you're willing to loose at times (i.e. don't play to win with them) They are THE army that everyone loves to play against (because their fluff is fun, and the rules can be anywhere from pretty good (hidden power claws, WAAGH! from turn 1 (if you bring gazzy he has a 2+ invuln the entire game), turn 1 charges) to pretty funny. I like them, and if you don't play to win too hard, you'll like them too.

No, you're not stupid to play Orks. Here's a thread to help you.

They aren't that competitive, but still a fun army.

For me, Orks are all about fun. And if you can pull off a win against a tough opponent, it's that much sweeter.
Even against tough opponents like Necrons, Orks can win. It's just more difficult. Play objectives missions. Stick to your strengths: large amounts of cheap troops, fast but flimsy vehicles, Power Klaws, etc. You will never out-shoot them, but you can do OK in assault. Make use of BLOS terrain. Stay far away from Wraiths.

As a secondary Army, Orks are fun to play with when you need a break from the typical shooty lists.
That being said, I've STARTED 40k with orks, and just recently began a Space Marine army and it is like playing a whole different game.... it's like going from hard mode to easy mode. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also keep in mind that Orks are the only faction affected by every single special rule and effects in the game. Morale, fear, regrouping, pinning, explosions, leadership, souk blaze, ignores cover, average bolter fire, overwatch, anti tank, challenges, initiative, terrain, and chatacteristic tests.
The only the game orks do well enough, is not caring about snapshots...

Orks are a blast, but can definitely be on the weaker side. If you do run them, run them for fun, as there are very few competitive Ork lists

If you are playing Maelstrom, Orks will easily beat a Decurion if played right (his troops don't have objective secured). I play an absurdly massive msu army (using grot tanks and other vehicles from IA8) and it routinely beats elite armies regularly...if the rolls are right. Regardless, it is a fun army and that is the point of Orks. If you don't take yourself too seriously, then Orks are a great army to play.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love |

You will get rekt, over and over again. The secret to playing Orks is to have a group of guys who are willing to gimp their own armies and lists to play down to your level. Orks are so embarassingly bad and their rules are a such hot mess, I have to almost believe that its intentional. There have been opportunities to fix them and bring them into 7th Edition as a legitimate army choice, but they've been consistently saddled with bad design for almost a decade now.

You play Nids and CSM you might as well go for the trifecta of the worst codexes. You really don't stand much of a chance against Crons and Eldar they are just going to blast you off the table.

I've had decent results both with orks and CSM. And yep, it's hard mode against modern armies. But a hell lota fun. There's nothing particularly thrilling when you play top armies and win. But when you pull a win with orks or csm, it's great. And develops your tactical genius way better.

I've been doing wonderfully against Necrons recently with my Orks.
The first few games went badly, but as soon as you realize MANZ missiles destroy warriors and Immortals, and that Litch guard and Wraiths can't swim (so drown them in bodies!!), you're good to go.

Heh heh heh...
As with many thinks Ork, bring duplicates. I've had enough games where my MANZ ended up footslogging and thus useless. But if you bring 2-3 units, odds are some will get into CC.

If you can play CSM and (to a lesser extent) nids with a smile, I'm sure you could play orks.
They may not be the best, but they are fun, people like to play them, and they are a hobbyist's dream with all the kustomization you can do.
