Not sure if he played it right, here are the rules for it: "To fire the focused death ray, nominate a point on the battlefield anywhere within its range, then nominate a second point within 3D6" of the first. Draw a straight line (considered to be 1mm in width) between the two points. Every unit (friendly or enemy) underneath the line suffers a number of hits equal to twice the number of models underneath the line."
So he had 2 sentry pylons, he shot one drew the 3d6 line, 4 models under the line so 8 hits, he states that since there are 2 pylons in the unit, it doubles to 16 hits. I thought each pylon needs to shoot on their own as its own artillery?
Now then in terms of wound allocation, he made me take saves starting from the model closest to where he nominated the first point rather than the model closest to the actual shooting pylon(who is a chapter master with eternal warrior and storm shield).
Did he play it right?

There's nothing in the focussed death ray rules to suggest he would be able to use a single 3D6" roll to determine the ray length of multiple focussed death rays, so I believe he was mistaken there.
There's nothing in the focussed death ray rules to tell you that wounds are allocated and casualties are removed from closest to the first point chosen, so again I think he was mistaken there.

As above. Nothing indicates the normal wound allocation processes are altered, so they are not.

We were playing by the NOVA format and no where in the FAQ suggest that either. I kinda had a feeling something was wrong, it was my first time playing against that BS forge world artillery, I was like holy crap this thing was OP. I couldn't tank with my IH CM out in the front and was losing librarians and Iron priests to ID. That many S10 AP1 attacks was crazy.
Its not like it has the barrage special rule: "To determine whether a unit wounded by a Barrage weapon is allowed a cover save, and when determining Wound allocation, always assume the shot is coming from the centre of the blast marker, instead of from the firing model. Hits against vehicles are always resolved against their side armor"
The original shot is still coming from the dang Pylon, even though the death ray allows him to "angle" the beam a further 3D6 length... Guy swindled me lol

It's possible he had it somehow confused with Beam type psychic powers, which are similar in terms of using a line to determine number of hits. But we're told they explicitly hit models under the line, not units, so the line also determines which models are hit. The focussed death ray instead says units are hit, which is how hits are ordinarily generated and leads to ordinary wound allocation.

Beams hit units under the line, not models. Units take hits based on the number of models under the line though.

Hah, you're absolutely correct. I read the beam rules yesterday before my initial reply and could have sworn it had said models when I was typing my second reply.

Off-Topic: You do realize that playing an IH Chaptermaster (probably stacked with goodies) together with Iron Priests makes you sound like you are cherry picking OP units and thereby not exactly in a position to cry "Cheese!" right? =)
That being said, the rules need to be followed. It sure sounds like they were not, to your disadvantage.
