I recently purchased a used monolith missing its portal for a sizable discount. I'm wondering, besides buying the portal from a bits website (which I'm definitely considering) what are some cool things I could do with that space? I'm still expanding my army, and currently have a sautekh color scheme going, but my force is still small enough to switch.

You could put a flat sheet in and paint a galaxy or void theme.
i dont think there would be too many options for that portal.

So many things! You do do the aforementioned flat sheet but i would encourage you to look for some textured plasticard. Plastruct makes some that look like water that would be cool, otherwise you can play with gel matte mediums and make your own.
I would say don't go the bitz route. You can really go nuts and have some fun with it coming up with something really unique and cool. If you botch it (whitch you won't), the bitz will be there.

Paint your own portal, and chop a Necron up to have him stepping out of that portal. Just say his torso, part of his arms and gun, and one leg stepping out.

Thanks everybody for the responses. I like the idea of getting water textured plasticard and using it as the portal. Then I could paint up the rest of the monolith to look like stone, and put flock and vegetation onto it to give it a "jungle temple" feel. FearPeteysodees, do you know where I could find the water plasticard, a quick search didn't yield any results.

I get mine a a local generic hobby shop. Try model train supply shops etc.
Otherwise this is what i was talking about and it looks like they have web ordering now:
http://plastruct.com/page/2/?min_price=0&max_price=20&s=water&post_type=product
Edit: Also remember with the clear stuff you can paint behind it before you lay it down and it'll give it a deep look. I use it for crusty ice on river terrain.
