They don't have a HQ unit (on the GW site) so I don't see how an army can be made.
Or are they supposed to be combined with Cult Mechanicus in some way?

This is out of curiosity. I'm not looking to start a Skitarii army (or am I? ).

Their book contains a special Detachment which is 2 mandatory Core choices(with 6 optional), 4 optional Elite choices, 2 optional Fast Attack choices, and 4 optional Heavy Support choices.

Additionally, the rules for Warlords mean that you can nominate any character model to be your Warlord--and Skitarii Alphas are Characters.

Long story short: you don't need an HQ choice.

Seriously. Their minimum detachment is 2 troops, and comes with pretty sweet benefits. They're the easiest army to add as allies ever.

Biggest flaw is their box coming with only 1 of each special weapon. If I had to go with wysiwyg I'd build a vanguard squad with 1 Caliver, and a Vanguard squad with 1 Arc (maybe a ranger squad so they can glance vehicles better?)

Then just add cyborg ostriches to taste.

What do you think about building the troops as vanguards but with the ranger hoods? Or is that their main distinguishing feature? I have the formation sheet that asks for vanguards with my box, and it seems they are the stronger unit, but I really like the ranger aesthetic with the hoods.

I would advise against doing hoods, just because the Skitarii infantry have such little differentiation between the two of them.

Also be advised that there are two separate formation datasheets. The Vanguard one is purportedly a misprint, and there's a version for Rangers instead of Vanguard. Same bonuses and everything, just Rangers instead of Vanguard.

They can't use an Allied Detachment because they don't have an HQ. They have to use one of their available detachments/formations

There have been rumors of an upcoming combined mechanicus codex with both the cult stuff and the skitari units baked in.

There's also the 'start collecting' box formation, with a bunch of skitari stuff, plus one of the cult HQs.

You would be fielding them as their unique "Skitarii Maniple" detachment.

They have different weapons, so it would be no problem at all.
