Does anyone have any advice on these things? I was playing an Imperial Knight formation (Baronnial Court) with 2 Crusaders and 1 Paladin backed up by a small Grey Knight allied detachment and they just trashed me. The Soul Grinders had higher armor values than my Knights and they had invulnerable saves to everything on top of it. Not to mention, the Knights Ion Shield wouldn't work to save them most of the time due to how blast weapons work and needing to put the shield on the front due to the variances of the game. There were 3 soul grinders in a formation.
I'm just at a bit of a loss here. I cannot think of how to handle these things with Imperial Knights.

Could you clarify what you mean by this? I thought that the shields could still work against blast weapons. Re: the better armour of the Soul Grinders, knights have 1 extra point of armour to the rear, and grinders have an extra point to the sides.

1. 13/13/11 is about the same as 13/12/12.
2. The invul is only a 5++, yes it is pretty good on a walker but you have 4++.
3. Regular blast and large blast work exactly the same as other weapons when concerning the ion shield, it is only barrage that messes it up and soul grinders to not carry barrage weapons.
Soul grinders shouldn't be that hard for a knight to take down: all you need to roll is one 6 in cc and he is done (+ you strike first and hit on 3's). As for their shooting they have a couple of high strength weapons but they each have one shot, their heavy3 weapon is only Str7 so glancing on 6's.
If you are struggling: charge them. No walker likes 4x StrD attacks in cc hitting on 3's.

For mrhappyface: I will admit, part of my problem was using a horde of Pink Horrors to make walls around the Grinders, so getting into close combat was difficult. I would clear a squad, get shot by the grinders, then have a new squad move in position in front of me. Obviously, they couldn't charge my Knight, but they would walk inbetween him and the Grinders.
As for clarification, our understanding of the rules was that blasts of all kinds always hit the side armor of vehicles and walkers. Since the Ion Shield was on the front-facing, the save did not apply to the blast weapons. If I threw the shield on a side, we still rolled 1D6 to see what side the blast was on and determine whether the invulnerable save applied. Is this wrong?

I guess I'll add that I don't remember the exact army comp he had, but there was Bel'akor, Fateweave, about 30 Pink Horrors, 3 Soul Grinders, a Blood Thirster and a Herald of Tzeentch in there that I remember.

non-barrage blasts hit whatever side they shoot from iirc, though it may be whatever side the hole is on, I don't run into the issue much.

i think you used wrong rules about grinder weapons, as crownaxe said only barrage hit always side armor, then str8 cant be so hard to deal it get pen hits only with 6 and glance at 5 not so scaring at all, next time play 1-2 errant with thermal cannon get at 18" from them and blast grinders with 2d6+9 pen hits  .

Phlegm Bombardment is Ordnance though, so it rolls twice and picks the highest for Armour Penetration.
Still, between Strength D Melee, higher Initiative and higher Weapon Skill and Stomp, Knights just roll over Soul Grinders in Melee.

can be ordnance but still few chances to hurt AV13, then any grinder catched in melee often become a burning wreck
