Hello all,
recently i made my own water palette, which has really improved my painting but I've run into a few issues which i'm not sure are actual problems or just a drawback from using a wet palette.
the main issues is that when i put a large amount of paint onto my palette, i would say between 25-50% of my paint seeps through the parchment paper into the sponge, meaning i waste alot of paint because the sponge catches all of it D:
anyway that's the main issues i have so i hope someone could help D:

Are you using wax paper or parchment paper? Parchment paper is what you want.

^^ This, is it most likely
Look for parchment paper in the baking type area of your local grocery store, or where they sell stuff like the wax paper, aluminum foils.

Thats your problem right there, use parchment paper.

I've had problems with parchment paper in the past. The P3 wet palette sheets should do nicely.

Alternatively, I found a perfect sized wet palette at Michael's (a art/hobby supply store here in the States) that was cheap, had a perfect-sized sponge, and affordable wet palette paper. Love it.

Ah if your parchment paper is that thin, then yeah see if you can get a pad of palette paper. Or a thicker parchment paper maybe.

I actually started off using a couple of folded paper towels as well, in my first wet palette, under parchment paper.

When you're prepping your palette box, make sure you don't have a soaking wet sponge. Squeeze it gently, it should be wet but not dripping water. Also, depending on what paper you use, you'll want to soak it in cold water for ten to fifteen minutes. I never found this as necessary with parchment paper but that palette paper, which is thicker art paper, you'll want to soak for sure.

Anyway, let us know how it's going! hope it's working out for you!

Don't cheap out on the parchment paper, make sure you get Reynolds. I use the 'sham-wow' towels instead of sponge... works very well.

Sorry for the (slight) necro, but do you happen to remember / are you able to grab the name of the brand, case, or w/e in your case?

I've been looking for a fairly cheapo (but effective) wet palette solution, however I live in a rather rural area so it's a good hour + to any art store. So I'd be interested in getting specific single-brand solutions, as opposed to a medly of a few various items which I might misorder. T_T

I have used both wax paper and dollar store parchment paper and had not really had any trouble with either.

Are you thinning/mixing on the palette too hard and it is tearing a hole?

Thinning shouldn't matter at all... I have mixes that are almost entirely water on mine hah. I use standard "Reynolds - Genuine Parchment Paper", available in the US and I assume Canada and it's always been fine.

It's worth noting that with the sham-wow towel underneath and a closable top - my mixes stay good literally for weeks.
