Hello Dakka!

I recently decided to give AoS a spin and after much scrutiny have decided that the scourge privateers are going to be my focus.

That said the realm reavers warscroll seems very small and there are not alot of scourge privateer models to choose from. I figure this means I will be either be forced to just keep adding to the few units allowed in the warscroll or add units from outside the subfaction.

Are you even able to take units from outside a formation/warscroll and still gain the benefit of the group? And if so, does anyone have any advice for pairings with the scourge privateers?

A battalion's special rules apply to the battalion units only, but you're free to have more units than that in your army (they just won't get the battalion's special rule if they're not part of it).

The scourge privateers are very tempting, and I love the theme. I'd say go with any models you think fit the theme of your force, from whatever faction necessary. Since they're all about hunting down and capturing monsters, perhaps adding in some other monsters might be thematic.

Only battalion units gain the benefits of the battalion unless the battalion states otherwise.

So, for example, the Realm Reavers battalion has 2 units of corsairs, 1 kharibydss, 1 fleet master, and 1 chariot unit. So if you have a second chariot in your army, you could include both chariots as a single unit of chariots and still receive the battalion bonus. If you want both chariots to be separate units, only one could get the battalion bonus.

So how do you bring a bigger force of scourge privateers and still get battalion benefits? Other books besides Grand Alliance Order have different dark elf battalions, some of which may also be of benefit for you.

Also, if you have a lot of dark elf units, you could potentially bring two or more realm reaver battalions.

As mentioned, you can keep making the units you take in the Warscroll larger or take a duplicate of the same Warscroll. There's also adding things from outside of the subfaction.

For example, my Dark Elf army was primarily Corsairs with a smattering of other stuff(a War Hydra, a significant amount of Cold One Knights, lots of Assassins, and some Dark Riders). Now I can split it up into a Realm Reavers(well, if I get a Kharibdyss) warscroll battalion, add in some Shadowblades faction stuff, and then some Ordo Serpentis.

Are you even able to take units from outside a formation/warscroll and still gain the benefit of the group?

You can take units from outside a formation/warscroll battalion with no issue. They will not benefit from the warscroll battalion's benefits unless it's something like "The Super Cool Guy in charge of this Warscroll Battalion grants all friendly units within <insert X distance here> the ability to reroll Hit/Wound rolls of <insert number here> or ignore Battleshock Tests or whatever perk that does not specify the Warscroll Battalion only gains the benefit".

Age of Sigmar has a really simple set of core rules, with the units themselves providing the "complexity".
And if so, does anyone have any advice for pairings with the scourge privateers?

Shadowblades faction. Dark Riders and some Assassins.

Dark Riders pair very well with Corsairs as far as battleshock shenanigans go. Dark Riders let you add d6 to the roll if the unit rolled a 1 for battle shock as long as they are within 14". So you have a slightly better chance of triggering the Corsairs ability to cause more casualties.

Problem I've always ran into is that most units will always pass their battle shock

Is that to compliment their notorious raiders ability?

Interesting, I hadn't even thought of working in battleshock as a tactic. Are there other units that play with those numbers at all? (I also just noticed the khabilysilisisal whatever it is called hydra thing has bravery reducing abilities and now feel pretty dense for not seeing this aspect of this army)

nothing in the Dark Elves army. Should note that the effect stacks if both units of corsairs are in range of unit that loses models to battle shock. So 2 chances to remove another model per model lost to battle shock.

Also there are armies that just don't care about battle shock. Anything deamon and Khorne Bloodbound usually don't have to take or worry about battle shock.
