So I’ve recently come into an interesting opportunity. A guy at my local gaming store is offering his Necron army, roughly 2000pts of it, for about $250, with the Codex and the datacards included as well. I’m torn about this good opportunity which looks like a massive discount for what models he has, and starting a new army in 40k. I also always wanted a xenos army as a third force alongside my Loyalists and Chaos. So I'm looking for advice on Necrons.

From what I remember he has:

A bunch of Necron HQ models
A solid mass of Warriors and Immortals
5 Praetorians
5 Lychguard
2 Annihilation Barges
2 Necron Flyers
1 C'tan Shard
2 Wraiths
1 Monolith
Some Tomb Blades
Plus various other misc models and Scarabs.

All of the above is mostly unpainted.

My question is simple, is it worth it to start Necrons? I like the models and the playstyle, but I’m not entirely certain if it’s for me, since I already have two Marine armies. I’m also on the fence on the newer lore about them. I actually like the whole ''Newcron'' lore, but many other people really don't.

1. The new lore is awesome, people who say otherwise either didn't read it, or are just salty.
The army now has character.

2. Necrons are fun to play because they are so versatile, If you find you don't like staying still as an unmoving silver anvil, you can go wraith/scarab heavy, You can bring a tonne of big guns, there is no real playstyle that necrons can't do (especially if competititve isn't an issue)

3. C'tan are fun , not the most competitive, likely to get shot off the table, but few moments in 40k are as fun as shuffling the 6 cards, and letting your opponent pick his doom.
Sure you might erase a guardsman or upset the paint on a land raider, but usually its not that bad :p

I'd reccomend necrons, you can definitely find fun playing them some way.

That's a pretty good deal, and Necrons are super friendly to paint.

Hell, even if you try them out and never want to see them again, odds are you'd make money reselling the army.

I think this is the biggest sticking point for me. I like the Necron models, I like the playstyle, I would enjoy painting and modeling them. However I am a rather thin-skinned player when it comes to lore. It wouldn't be the first time I abandoned a 40k army because of lore backlash. At least with my Ultramarines and Black Legion it was easy to repaint them into another force that wasn't trashed by the fandom but that seems like a less likely possibility than Necrons.

Anybody that butthurt about the Ultramarines is just angry their special snowflakes didn't get the same treatment. Don't bother worrying over that stuff.

New cron lore is very versitile, there are options to still have the old killer robots with no thought but harvest, the insane destroyers killing everything , virus infected flayed ones or the newer versions of rebuild the empire/polictical crons even there, there is variance with honerable lords or insane ones or even isolationists ones. All the new background did was expand on the old and as more is 'learned' it will change again.
