A Protoss colony world

I've recently found out that Kings of War is becoming very popular around my FLGS (partly by former WHFB players). I have a tax return coming, which should get here in a week or two. I'm debating getting started in the game as it looks like a great game with great models, and cheaper than GW models. If I do take the plunge and start it, my chosen army will most likely be Dwarves. I've always liked Dwarves in fantasy settings, as they always seem like tough people and have cool weapons and stuff. I was thrilled with the third Hobbit movie showing Dwarves in combat, something I always wanted to see on the big screen. But I digress.

Anyway, if I wanted to start a Dwarf army for KoW, what kind of stuff should I be looking to get first? I figure the army starter box is probably a no-brainer, and I will, of course, need a copy of the rulebook, but what additional stuff should I figure on getting? Also, how many points are in the starter, and how many is considered to be a tournament level army? Are Dwarves even really competitive in the current meta for the game, or am I likely to just get annihilated (other than being a complete newbie at the game)? Any advice at all would be most appreciated!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

This guy has quite a few battle reports with dwarves; should give you an idea of how they go. Battle reports 30 and 31 sum up 6 games at Adepticon.

While you're working on the army / testing things out, folks here sometimes just use bases to start! So, finding a cheap place to get laser cut bases helps (even if you want to individually base your models, a correctly sized tray is important).

Point level is usually 2000 but you can also do 1500. It plays much faster than fantasy at these levels!

I like having the pdf of the rulebook, but for making lists you can just use this site, it's great once you have the hang of it! The rulebook lays out the basics of list building better but this lets you go to town later

Although honestly I like doing manual lists for KoW, too. Just remember, each regiment lets you take a hero, monster, or warmachine. Each horde or legion lets you take one of each!

You also can take 2 troops per regiment, or 4 troops per horde/legion. I've never come close to wanting to take more troops than I'm allowed, though - regiments are generally a better deal except for chaff / harrassment units and the like.

Seconding the Brock! Time after time they have been the most valuable part of my armies.

Rangers are also very nice - Pathfinder and Vanguard are nothing to sneeze at!

A solid gunline with artillery and a Warsmith can deal a large amount of damage at range.

You also might want to consider a KoW token pack, lots of different laser cutters have them on sale now, usually from the same places you can get diorama bases/movement trays, depending on your preference.

The game doesn't really need a lot of different tokens, but there are a basic few that are very useful to have around, particularly for new players.

As for the dwarfs being competitive - they can hold their own in most games.

Headstrong means that they can be danged hard to break. Which means that in Kill! missions they tend to be able to take the damage to win a war by simple attrition.

Bulwarkers are very, very sturdy - and positioned right can act as a wall that cavalry break upon.

The Brock are good for scenarios where you need to move in and hold positions, ditto for the Rangers.

So, yeah - they are a good army. (My good lady plays my dwarf army these days - she bought me Abyssals... in part, I think, to free up the dwarfs for her.)

*EDIT* The Dwarf Megaforce is also pretty reasonable, price wise, and gets you the Brock and the Bombard, as well as the Warsmith. Between that and the dwarf army... I might favor the Megaforce a bit, it has more variety, but the same number of models.

Second this. I watched a lot of their videos before I was able to play my first game and it really helped orient me to the mechanics. Even now that I have a better understanding of the game I still enjoy their content very much.
