I figured that the guard has lots of love around here *Snort* Nah i just saw a thread talking about how trash the lasgun is. So I figured. "Hey! I wonder what EVERYONE thinks about the Good old guard. The (worst, dirty, smelly: Quote from my friend) guardsmen!"

what do you guys think?

well I like the guard a lot. But hopefully they stop retconning the fluff (ollanius) and maybe give us a boost in the next codex. I love the idea of just murdering as many as my own troops as possible as long as in the end they achieve their objective. I don't really enjoy setting up and entire army only to have to carefully put it away without them accomplishing much! But that's the life of a guard play I suppose!

I've been enjoying the out of my Guard to be honest.

It's one of those armies that I don't forsee myself stopping collecting them regardless of their power level. That being said, I am using them in a thousand point Highlander Tournament this weekend.

The guards tanks are master race. I mean A BLOODY BANEBLADE has like 200 weapons to choose from. And those leman russes. Like a punisher with pask or a demolisher can kill a squad of space marines if its placed right.

I like the idea of the Guard. I like the look of some Guard builds. They also remind me of the 7th ed Dark Eldar codex.

I don't care for them much. I feel they fall in to the same trap that Tau do, in that they only really do well in a single phase of the game, and at the moment, they're not particularly good in that one phase either. I'll grant that they're slightly less 1d than Tau, as they have a close combat unit, and can field psykers, but it's not enough in my case.

They've got plenty of character though, and lots of guns, and the 'mook in flak jacket with torch and lots of guts' factor, so I can see why others like them.

Back in 5th, assault guard was actually pretty decent. Blobs with commissars, power swords, melta guns, and grenades backed by Straken could put out a dizzying amount of S4 hits, not to mention the dozen or more power sword attacks from sergeants and commissars. Throw in Al Rahem for some sweet extra movement and outflanking and you'd have a fun assault army.

Fluff wise they are super cool... Yarrick needs to be more of a beast in cc though I mean you have all that psychic ork energy being channeled to him as the revere his close combat abilities and not even many space marines captains and go tow to toe 1v1 vs a warboss and some out alive.

on the table they need more mobility or should I say their mobile choices need to be stronger... they are like playing against guard. I have a few k points in them and rarely use them for more than the occational (read maybe once a quarter) ally... they are a powerful army but like tau their strength is gunline and sub tanks instead of suits

Yarrick needs to be squatted and Commissars need to die in a fire.

They're useless trash and they take up a spot that could have been made to create an actually interesting and unique alternate HQ choice compared to the Command Squads we get in Tempestus and Guard.

On the tabletop? They're pretty low tier and I've yet to lose a game against them.

In the fluff? Pretty cool.

I would like to make an artillery company one day, but yet another case of so many projects, so little time that it just repeatedly gets put on the backburner.

Yeah, but practically no one played them that way. "CC Guard" with Straken and all was a "fun" list, but if you wanted to play "for real" then it was all MSU parking lots and valkyrie/vendetta spam.

They're just as "interesting" as Tau are gameplay-wise, as it was said. The reason no one complains about them though is obviously because they aren't a "power" army. I imagine if they were on the same level people would hate them just as much (then again, anti-Tau bias is a thing, so maybe people would still hate them less just because they're Guard). Personally I don't mind Guard much, I used to like them and think they have some cool models, but the infantry kits are just terrible and ultimately I couldn't get into them. I tried, too; I had plans on doing a mixed force of Catachans and Elysians, because there's actually an example in the 5th edition codex of such a combined regiment (the 314th Prosan I think?) that specialized in air-mobile jungle warfare and it just sounded awesome to me. Didn't feel like shelling out the cash for all the FW Elysian stuff and the Catachan plastics are also obviously garbage, so I lost interest pretty quick.

The old Catachan metals were decent, though. I'm pretty sure I had some but I got rid of the whole lot because like I said, I lost interest, didn't feel like putting the work in.

But yeah, Guard are kind of lacking, both rules-wise and as far as models go. They're in desperate need of some new infantry in my opinion. Then again if they do come out with new infantry I imagine the cost of collecting Guard will skyrocket, if the Scions are anything to go by.

Ride of valkaye/vendetta still works.

People seem to be ashamed of spamming big guns but I'm pretty sure in the fluff that's an IG tactic. In a way your being fluffy.

I think they could be so much more if their play style was more defined. If a tank roles up the table I should feel dread, not elation that my melta will be in range sooner. If Guard had some formations that mimicked ww1 to modern day tactics they'd be so much cooler. I'd like an ability to call 2 blast templates onto any guard unit one with and one without scatter, I would imagine a guardsmen knowing he is outnumbered so as he makes his last breath he calls out for arty strike on his position to destroy the enemy who are locked in cc next to him.

I think that "call and artillery strike on my position" used to be an IG Apoc ability. Something about a Vox operator (or a model with a vox pack) could call a single basalisk strike onto himself. I can't recall if it scattered or not. I never had a chance to use it so I'm not certain of its effectiveness.

Note: It used too. I can't find anything to say its still around in the current Apoc.

Commissars are absolute and utter trash. I want them gone. They're being shoved down my throat in formations that SHOULD be touting Tempestus or Guard officers instead of some scrub Priest reject in a trenchcoat with a funny hat.

Do you know why I refuse to run the Tempestus formation for Valkyries, despite being able to?

I love commissars. Maybe not so much tabletop wise but in the fluff especially. They really help give the IG that WW2 Russian army feel where if you're not running towards the enemy gun fire you'll be running back into your commanding officers bayonet.
