Ok been reading up on salamanders fluff recently and ive got a question i couldnt find a fluff answer for. Given they have no known successor chapters due to having continuous low body counts, is it possible that they could have successors at all? I ask this as im considering starting a 40k army of sallies but i dont want to use the typical green black scheme and i dont want to "rule of cool" something without having believable fluff behind it...anyone's thoughts?

If its not possible, i might just reconsider my chapter choice...

No known successors.

"The Salamanders are officially reckoned to have no descendants, though several Imperial scholars have pointed out various similarities in unit markings and tactical dogma in the Storm Giants and Black Dragons Chapters. It is possible that these Chapters were created at some unknown, later date from stockpiled gene-seed, but whatever the claims, the Salamanders claim kinship with no other Chapter." (From lexicanum, take with a grain of salt as you please)

The biggest thing about 40k is the fluff is so bendable that you can nearly get away with anything. Salamanders could have had something happen at some point that isn't written about or insert plot here that had some group of them go off and make another chapter.

The biggest thing is that the original Sallies don't seem to admit if someone might be related to them. but again, the universe is to big and crazy. There is a possibility for a chapter to form with Salamders gene seed, tactics and all that out there is the great expanse.

They have no successors as in Chapters that were created directly from the Salamanders Legion.
There could however very well be Chapters founded later on with Salamanders geneseed.

Yeah, there doesn't have to be a direct cultural/command link between a chapter and its successors for them to have a Primarch in common; the chapters (are supposed to) tithe part of their recovered geneseed to Mars for testing, ostensibly to ensure deviance is detected and eliminated where possible, but there's no actual reason for such testing to be wholly destructive so a stockpile could be built up on the sly.

Ooor the Salamanders have cultural/psychological issues with acknowledging successor chapters publicly so they just don't, even if they do have them and help them etc.

Considering how the Black Dragons battle cry is "Fire and Bone!", they have a dark grey skin mutation *and* try to save civilian lives. They are most certainly a Salamanders successor.

Another way to think about "No known successors" might be to think of it as "No confirmed successors".

It's a big universe as has been stated above and much of what was one known is now lost.

The Black Dragons are basically a shoo-in, but could there be others out there? Only the most ancient of techpriests could know... and they're not telling.

Go for it though. The existence of the Black Dragons shows it could be possible, but those successors might just be quite rare.

Given the Salamanders' propensity for being cautious, and especially after the Dragons turned out less than perfect, attracting the attention of the Inquisition may not be for the best.

My money is on Vulkan's boys being careful and telling the Ad Mech not to go creating dozens of suspect chapters.

Are there too many "typical green" Salamander armies in your gaming group? I don't haunt the game store anymore on 40K night. But, I don't recall more than one Salamander army back in the day. Are you sure green Salamanders aren't atypical? I only ask because perceptions from 40K books and online may not be what happens in your "real world". And, the desire to do something different can sometimes cause more trouble than it's worth. Not trying to talk you out of doing something you want. Just asking you to ask yourself if this is what you really want. You may be trying to fix something that ain't broken.

I think I could make a case for green. Of all the dang colors on the colorwheel, green is one of the easiest to paint. With a ton of different shades and hues. It's not a pain like yellow, or sometimes red. It looks good both dark and light, which blue sometimes does not. It goes on with one coat. It highlights and shades more easily. Works great with brown ink shades, which is the easiest to use. True that Sallies don't own the color green, but it's not that really overused (except by Orks). Dark Angel's green is indeed darker. Plus, if you use decals, they make'em for Sallies.

Again, it's your army. You are the only one you have to please, you are the only one you can blame. There are 1000 SM chapters, I doubt 100 have been "officially" named and their color schemes portrayed. There is ALWAYS an exception to every damn 40K rules. By design. GW would much rather you buy and paint your Salamander models pink, than you not buy them at all.

Oh, by the way, I bought a used copy of Space Hulk 2 that came with partially painted dark green Dark Angel Termies. Everyone knows Death Wing is white. I finished them off (admittedly, a dark green) and slapped on some Salamander decals. Easy peasy. They aren't "typical green" Salamanders, but they look good and make me happy. So, go green, or go home! Or, it's your thang! Good luck!
