I would normally recommend a tactical box. However, if you were to do that I'd just get a squad of ten BaC Marines off ebay.
So that being removed, Assault Marines or a Command squad is pretty neat. Assault Marines aren't the greatest for their points though.
Can't go wrong with any FW marine squads or units though, especially the smaller ones.

With the compatibility of the space marine kits, I'd be tempted to buy as much as you can in one go, and have a great time kit bashing. The sternguard box is one of my favourites for this, loads of spares to make your tactical squads more varied. The devastator kit is also great for it, and gives loads of useful stuff. Sternguard is definitely my favourite though, and well worth the money.

You really can't go wrong with a Tactical Squad. You get more models for your buck than most other SM kits, a ton of great parts and any SM army is going to need a squad or two of these guys at its core. They're not that fiddly to assemble, but there's plenty of scope for conversion if you're feeling up to it,
The other thing I might suggest is the Start Collecting Space Marines set, it has good savings in, an awesome Captain model, a Tactical Squad and a Dreadnought which is one of the coolest and most iconic Space Marine models going. So yeah, if you can spend a little more, I'd grab that one.

For the Lion and Terra!
Because nothing in the galaxy is black and white, Mankind views the Space Marines as a last resort. The last line. When all else fails. They take up the burden. The noble defenders of Mankind. The last hope.
With finecast you can bypass the washing stage and throw them straight into the bin.
Or cut out the middleman and just flush some money down the toilet.

Before buying a pack, first you should decide what chapter are you going to play. But over all starting with Tactical Squad is a great option. It has transfer sheets for almost everything.

I'm voting for the Tactical squad, probably my favourite kit.

Tactical squad is a strong starting choice, but for starting out, their 'Start Collecting' Space Marine set is good value, and you'll get the tactical squad, a commander, and a dreadnought for $85!

Tactical Squad for bulk marines (Could also go with the BA one if your chapter goes that way) and then Sternguard gets you so many bits for some great kitbashes.
