So the Saturday just gone was my locals store championship. So after a few weeks of prep I ended up deciding on this list.

Squadron: Store championship list
TIE Phantom: •Echo (38)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Recon Specialist (3)

TIE Phantom: Sigma Squadron Pilot (32)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
Recon Specialist (3)

TIE Phantom: Sigma Squadron Pilot (30)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
Intelligence Agent (1)

Total: 100/100

The first round saw me go up against vader, inquisitor palp shuttle. I took down vader rather quickly but my phantoms were slowly whittled away by the inquisitor backed by palp. I eventually took the shuttle down to half and ended the round with a loss of 51/100.

Round two saw me pitted against vader, Fel and echo. Managed to take down Vader and Fel at the expense of echo and one of the Sigma pilot's. Time was running short and I managed to catch echo but got it down to 1 hull left. Another loss but a narrow one.

Round three saw me go against my sparing partner and his two IG's (bot bros). We had played against each other a few time's before the championships so I know what I was up for being all previous games resulted in a loss for me. So started the round stealthed and got into position he came in strong and I arc dodged and managed to get in behind. Pelted the first IG with 8 hits and managed to strip all the shields and got three crits in. Next round saw him go down and a few shots put on the second. He managed to get a few shot's on one of my sigma pilot's resulting in a pilot with only 1 hull. Next turn I managed to connect with the IG and won the round 100/0

Fourth round I came up against a trio of A wings. I had never played against them so I wasn't sure what I was going to be getting into. By the end there was just Echo vs Tycho. I managed to follow Tycho around the board but he kept me at range 3 for the autothrusters but I got him down to 1 hull, then I got a bit cock sure of myself and my last move saw me decloak and 2 bank straight into his line of fire at range 1... never have I been so pissed at myself. I played straight into his trap. So a fourth round loss for me.

In the end I came in 10th out of 14. I'm sold on this list but next time I need to think of potential traps before I fly into them. I am considering taking this to regionals later on.

The main problem is that you're PS 8 with no initiative bid, so against other aces you're either going to be shot before you can re-cloak or arc-dodged constantly, whichever your opponent thinks will hurt you more. This is a really bad thing in a metagame full of PS 8-9 ace lists.

Actually it wasn't that big of an issue honestly. My decloaking kept my opponent guessing. The thing that let me down was actually my piloting in the late game stage. Round two there wasn't much I could do except for chase echo and the last round I just didn't think his potential move through.

The one other thing I want to say as well is in all four game's I used the terrain to my advantage as much as possible and I couldn't recommend this more to anybody that does use a similar list

The problem is that ships like Soontir Fel don't have to guess, they can use their maneuvering actions to get you in arc after you've told them where you're going to be. And then, because you're only PS 8, you get shot at with only two green dice for defense. It's a very bad position to be in, and one of the reasons that no top-tier competitive lists use Echo.

Assuming that they even get the right direction in the first place.

Usually it's fairly obvious which way a phantom is going, because one side is clearly a bad idea. And then once you decloak it's usually pretty obvious what your maneuver must be to turn that decloak into a useful move. But even if they guess wrong the first time they're probably going to get more shots at you, while your 40-point z-95 is going to need a lot of luck to survive getting caught in arc more than once or twice. It's possible for you to win that duel, but the odds are definitely against you by a pretty big margin.

Well done! it's good to see someone making successful use of the TIE phantom. The Intelligence Agent is a very good call. It might actually be worth considering swapping the other recon specialist for one too.

The big 'oh bugger' mistake happening once you were down to 1v1 is probably not co-incidence; intel agent is an amazing card.

I'd say the issue with pilot skill is far more in the combat phase; as noted, the difference between shooting first and second with a TIE Phantom is massive. You can out-fly vader and fel if you out-play them, especially using your two sigmas as blockers. The real problem will be high PS turrets - Dengar is a good example - because whilst soontir can boost/barrel roll to get out of your arc, it'll often cost him his shot. A turret, however, will always have a shot at you if you have one at it.

At the same time; Echo's pilot skill is such that you're never going to out-pilot skill soontir, vader, poe, etc. So I'd be half tempted to say 'screw it' and use your EPT for something else.

If you wanted to use the low PS sigmas to block, intel agent and stygium particle accelerator pair up well. That saves you enough points to equip Echo a bit more lavishly.

Recon specialist is good - making up for not getting whisper's free focus token ability - but if you can get used to using him right, Agent Kallus works amazingly well. A sensor jammer can be very effective too - you only have to have it stop one damage for it to be as good as a shield upgrade, and normally you can do more than that.

An especially nasty combination if you can get the hang of it is Juke/Kallus/Sensor Jammer.

Against your named 'prey', you don't need to focus, so can evade instead. Sensor jammer requires your opponent to spend his focus on the attack or lose a hit, juke to spend it on the defence or lose an evade. It's not going to work on poe dameron or glitterstim users, but it's very annoying on anyone else.

It's especially annoying on deadeye ordnance carriers, who can't afford to use their focus token on either as they need it to arm their torpedoes....

I was lucky that I didn't go up against turrets but there was only two players with turreted ship's.

I hadn't thought about using the Sigma pilot's as blockers. I used then more in a triangle formation spread out to get as many ships caught in multiple lines of fire (if that makes sense). I'll look in on sensor jammers and agent kallus
