Lately I've been feeling a desire to start building Iron Hands to go with my AdMech, but I'm not really sure where to begin (or even if I actually want to). I'm looking for recommendations or other relevant info on this project so I don't go overboard with my AdMech waiting for a Chaos core update.

An Iron Hands Biker army, while not on the same level as White Scars, is pretty respectable. Thanks to the supplement, it is easier to take two Chapter Masters that it would be a pain to kill.

Razorbacks are great in the new supplement too because of universal power of the machine spirit. 12 inch move with full BS on assault cannons and las/plas is fun.

Well for one thing I would pick up C: SM and the Angels of Death supplements. That's a "must-have".
Are you wanting to run the unique Detachment for Iron Hands? A normal Detachment? Gladius Strike Force from C: SM?
Do you want to go whole hog on vehicles? Have infantry AND vehicles working together?
Foot-slogging force? Drop Pod heavy force? Mobile force?
There's a lot of options under "Angels of Death". It's kinda bananas to be honest.

If you wanted you could run a solid support focused iron hand army. You just take their decurion and the armored task force as their super cheap core. Take 1 or 2 command forces to take Smashfether and smashbane with their command squads. You can even choose to take a single basic dread as your required aux choice and you have a very solid force to work with your ad mech.

I'm wanting to run a fluffier force with them, so I'd want to run the unique detachment I suppose. Does it still benefit from the Chapter Tactics in the main codex?

Yup! All models in a "Fist of Medusa Strike Force" requires you to take the Iron Hands Chapter Tactics.
Truthfully, while $33 might sound like a lot for the "Angels of Death" supplement?
It contains everything from the Kauyon book(some of the White Scars/Raven Guard formations are placed into the Fist of Medusa Strike Force listing) which was around $80 and it also contains the stuff previously published in Clan Raaukan for Iron Hands.
Totally worth the outlay IMO.

What would be a good start model wise? I should have plenty of AdMech stuff to do allies for them (after I get around to assembling and painting them anyway), but as I tend to order in spurts some recommendations on what to pick up alongside the codex would be appreciated.

Techmarines. Lots of Techmarines. I don't are if you don't use em you aren't an Iron Hands player without techmarines.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do. |

Battle Demi-Company.
It's literally that entire formation(3x Tactical Squads, 1x Devastator Squad, a Captain, an Assault Squad, and the 0-1 Dreadnought) in a discounted box. It's $220 for $253 worth of stuff.
It is no longer available via GW's webstore, but you can probably still find them floating around on shelves.
