I've been paying Tau for a year and I want to start an Ork army. I'm totally new to Orks and hoping for some advice?
I'm starting with a 500pt army, I want to make it strong against Tau, but flexible against other armies.

Against Tau it will be up against 24x Firewarriors, Etheral, 10x Pathfinders 2x railrifles, 1x Ion rifle, drones, sniper drone team.

Here is my list:

Stormboyz are runnin with zag...
Gotz are camping backfeild ..lootas on mid feild objkectives and plincking everything

Drop the burnas and the nobz. on foot they will get you no where. give the tankbustas a trukk for mobilities sake (it will still die alot but better than your tankbusta squad getting shot to death in 1 round)
instead of the burnas maby throw a basic WB in and give trukks to your walking boyz. that way you get waaagh goodness (move run charge during waaagh, effects both the stormboys and the boyz).

The problem here is that if you're walking over to the Tau, it's gonna be a bad time. You have two ways to go about orks. Lots of models on foot, like a ridiculous amount, or fast with trukks/bikes. This list has too few models to be a footslogging list.

I personally would recommend dumping Zagstruk, the burna boys, the nob squad, the tankbusta nob, and the warbuggies. Usually a warboss is prefered, and if you're taking footsloggers he's a necessity for his Waaagh ability. If you're going fast you could just grab a Big Mek at this level, but you could keep Zagstruk if you took a unit of stormboyz, which I find are best in a speedy list.

For footsloggers, go two units of twenty boyz, and spend the rest on lootas. The boyz will want a nob with a bosspole too. PK's are wanted at higher point values, big choppas should be fine here. Shooting is favoured by the current rules, so they'll need covering fire. The firewarriors wih pahfinders and Ion rifle can put the hurt on. Statisically they'll wipe both your ten man units in one turn. The lootas can hit right back. The big mek guns are good too if you prefer. Go Lobbas or KMK if you do.

If you want to go fast, give the boyz a trukk each. Stormboyz for Zag if you're gonna keep him, or a big mek instead. Warbikes are really good, but the Tau markerlights have ignore cover so they're not as tough vs them.

Whether you decide to take more boyz or give the ones you have trukks, it'll be tankbustas, lootas, or big mek gunz you'll want to take vs Tau. Any ork can hurt the Tau in CC, but those guys will trade fire with them and it won't be a game of moving a couple inches, remove some orks, moving a couple inches, remove some orks, repeat.
