Hey dakka,
a couple of months ago i started my very first wh 40k army. I bought the Dark Vengeance + the crimson slaughter package & started immediately with gluing them together (which was, in hindsight, not the smartest thing to do).
First, i began with the Chosen and realized "I'm really sh*t at painting" so i stopped immediately, frustrated with myself. It took me a couple of months to try again - and instead of painting the most-detailed mini's, i went to the largest,
most bulky mini - the Landraider. Thanks to the endless hours of stalking DakkaDakka & some Youtube-videos and despite my left-hand tremor i decided to go ahead and try out some freehand's. Here's the result:

Right side; i drew a deer skull from memory & added some more details like horns etc.

Left side; template is based on the Khorne-Symbol and a 'more realistic' skull fused in one.

Your thoughts?

That is pretty good for you first free hand attempt. Not perfect but you will improve over time, and experience.

Nice work.

I think they look fantastic. very comic bookeeee if thats what you went for.

I think the chaos arrows could use some cleaning up on the deer side.

but otherwise it looks great.

Not even fair how much better you are than me.

very cool. my only criticisms would be to maybe reduce the size, i know this will make it harder, but i feel that the area they are on is a little too large, and would benefit from a smaller graphic.
for your skulls, look at lots of reference material, as the eye looks a little funny to me (skulls are a favourite of mine so i draw them constantly) but thats it mainly. keep working on your transitions through the shading, and that steady line work and you'll be there.

I love freehand.
Don't ever paint from memory. Always put reference material on the computer or TV, it'll really help your freehand.
Bigger is great, but can make errors more obvious.
Texturing will help when you work on a larger scale, so IRS less flat.
Great work!
