Crushing Black Templar Crusader Pilot

Hey guys,

With the WIP that is my Black Templars Supplement and General Changes to the Current Space Marines Codex (Found Here), I figured it would be a good idea to start a thread where people offer up (a) piece(s) of advice regarding the best way to go about creating a Fandex or other Fan-Made Document for Tabletop (e.g. a Supplement, a General Changes Document, a Scenario/Campaign Book, etc).

So what are your tips, tricks and general rules for approaching something like this?

My 2 Cents:

-- Always try to base your rules on existing ones first. The existing rules are play tested and approved, and as a result, you can't stray too far into OP territory if your rules are heavily based in 'balanced' ones.

-- Always have a reason for making a change or introducing a rule. "This is a cool idea" almost never flies when given as a reason for introducing or changing a rule. For example, the changes I proposed to the Hunter-Killer Missile are designed to make it a viable weapon that's not only worth the points but also something that people actually take. I didn't make the changes to make Hunter-Killer Missiles cool.

-- Fluff is always a good source of inspiration when making changes to rules or introducing new ones. Does the rule make sense for the Faction(s) you're making these rules for? Do they fit the fluff? There's not a lot of point having a rule almost identical to the Black Rage if the Chapter you're writing the rules for is a Successor Chapter of the Ultramarines. (Obviously there's room to move with that specific example, but hopefully you get my gist).
