Not to be offensive of anything. But I never actually seen people play this at my gw. Or actually, no where at all. It's also pretty sad that you can't buy any of the models at a gw.

My wife and I started playing, and it has been my understanding that the pockets of players are small, but intensely loyal, especially in Europe where there are considerable numbers of players.
It took me actually playing to understand that loyalty, but having done so, I "get it". It really does feel like the best rule-set GW has ever made, and so far we can tried a bunch of armies and builds, and it is proving hard to "break".
I will say it has been challenging to find more players here in NY, but within an hour's drive I can meet up with two or three players. That said, the same can be said of tons of amazing games like Frostgrave and This Is Not a Test, or even Bolt Action which has maybe ten total players within an hour of me.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and for a "dead" game to maintain the loyalty Hobbit (now "Middle Earth SBG") has, says something. I wouldn't be surprised if word gets around about the game's pseudo-relaunch and a bunch of folks pick it up around October.
I'm hoping it'll be easy to sell folks on the game, as we've had fun even with 250pt games... which can be had with maybe $60 spent per player.

LotR players are pretty rare. Especially when compared to 40k. But every game is pretty rare compared to 40k. And LotR still has more players than 90% of all those other games out there. If you think finding games of LotR is hard, you haven't yet tried finding games of Dropzone Commander, Dystopian Wars or other smaller games. I really wish LotR would be played more around here. It is the only game for which I have completely painted armies. Mostly I just have my cousin to play with, and it would be nice to see something else besides hordes of Orcs or Gondorians from time to time.

It has a 'cult' following amongst gamers round here. Still got a small but very loyal group of followers.
I'm glad GW are maintaiging support for this game, despite the fact that the fanbase has faded it really is a very well designed game. Flexible, balanced and extremely tactical.

I want to start collecting this game, but everyone I inform about it completely disagree with me. I always liked the hobbit and the lotr series

We have a large group of players, but most of them got into it because of Cubicle 7 and its 1 ring game.

Well, it is really cheap, so you could always just collect a bit.

It seems to have always been crowded out at the GW stores by 40K and WFB but certainly at one point it was very widely played. My old FLGS used to organize LOTR nights were we'd play a big multi-player game then watch one of the movies. There has also been a resurgence in tournament gaming the last few years (try googling "Great Britain Hobbit League" for an example).
The recent news of renewed support for the game from GW has also sparked some interest among new and old players.

What do you mean "disagree"? Is it that they think its a bad game (its not) or that they just aren't interested in the LOTR (fair enough)? If you are serious about playing, you might try collecting two small forces. Any of the old starter boxes ( Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, Return of the King or Mines of Moria. I'd avoid the Escape from Goblintown starter as IMO its much more limited in terms of expandability) are good for this. Then run some demo games. Doing that's always a great way to spark interest in a "new" game.

I will mostly agree with the above, but will add that Goblin Town does have its perks. It can often be found for $70-80 online, and for that price an "Evil" player will have a really fun army with some odd and interesting mechanics... plus the terrain it comes with is pretty cool.
Yes, the Good player ends up with only a few models usable in broader armies (Thorin, Balin, and a couple others can have a proper army build around them with Grim Hammers and Warriors of Erebor), but the value is still there.
Beyond that... its such a cheap and excellent game to get into, even if you're buying for two players. The wife and I started by assembling 500pts each of Durin's Folk and Isengard, and even with heroes, we MAYBE spent $150 for BOTH armies combined. And that's a proper sized, and fun game there, which can't be said about most games with 25+ models per side.
Its even been fun when we've thrown 45 minutes at a tiny game with maybe 13 models per side. Still tactical, and still just really enjoyable.

The best thing to do is check with your local players and see if anyone has any LOTR armies they want to offload cheap (or free). Great way to start.
All those players who are poo-poo-ing your desire to play should not forget that LOTR license and game along with Dawn of War basically doubled GW's size in the early 2000's and turned them into the behemoth they are today.

Who cares what other people think about it? If you want to collect and run the project, then do it for your own enjoyment.

@fenrir kitsune the reason no one plays historical games at your local GW is probably because they don't allow non-gw games there. (i think)

He was only eight when GW dropped it. I mean, I think most of us get your point but he honestly missed it ... so I'll just spell it out:
What you see played at the local GW shop is no kind of measure for what miniatures gamers are playing. In the UK (and to some extent in the US), most of the LotR/Hobbit scene appears to be club-based. Check out the Great British Hobbit League YouTube channel, for example.

Mind you, there are exceptions. :-p
A new full Games Workshop is opening in Cranston, Rhode Island in the US and I know someone organizing a large SBG game day to celebrate that opening.
