Where ever the Emperor needs his eyes

Right, I've been brainstorming my army as of late, and I figured some back and forth with my fellow dakkaites could help fuel that. Because not everything is about me obviously, I figure we can also throw around ideas for other armies too.

So, I've decided I should actually try and figure out what I really want to do with my Army, both in the future and with what I have now. Rather than run with my lose idea for it, cause that always ends with me not knowing what I really want, which stalls the army until its just not built.

As such I have decided that I will pretty much be dropping Veteran Tacticals, except for maybe one Squad. The reasoning being, that when I think about it, I would much rather just bring a Squad of Mor Deythan and 2 or 3 Apothecaries, who I feel would be a much better use of my Elites Choices. Additionally, as I figure I will use the Decapitation Strike RoW fairly often, I think I will want two Deathstorm Drop Pods to take up the other two Elites Slots left over. I'm not entirely sure how effective they are, but I like the idea behind them and they really seem to mesh well with the Decapitation Strike. Or at the very least, in being limited in Heavy Support choices I will want them to bolster anti-tank. I would like at somepoint in the future to also have either a Xiphon, a Primaris Lightning or both to fill in my Fast Attack slots, with the third and final slot being taken up by a squad of Dark Furies (I love Lightning Claws, and their models, plus they look good). I'm thinking the Primaris Lightning, mostly for the phospex bombs to be honest, but having some of the Kraken Penetrators with Tank Hunters also seems like a good idea to again, shore up the lack of Anti-Tank. Xiphon would also be for Anti-Tank as well as Anti-Flyer duty. For my single Heavy Support Slot, I have no clue what I would take, maybe a Fire Raptor to continue the theme of Air to Ground? Or a Leviathan Siege Dread?

Now, that is mostly what I would like to have in the future as the only things I have so far, are two BaC sets. The Terminators and Dreads I am not overly concerned with, they will likely mostly be used to fill my Elites until I have those units listed previously. The problem comes from my 60 "Tactical" Marines, and what to do with them. Right now I am thinking I will go for the tried and true two squads of Twenty Tactical Marines, which will take forty of the sixty I have to work with. From there I am fairly sure I want one Tactical Support Squad of 5 guys with Plasma Guns, who likely will eventually end up in a Drop Pod, to build up numbers for Drop Pod assault, so I can take that on the Deathstorms and get them in turn one when the area will be at its most target rich.

That puts us at 45 of the 60 used, with 15 left.

Now for those last 15, I was thinking I could make 5 of them a Heavy Support Squad with Missile Launchers, which I could put an Infiltrating, Cameleoline Siege Breaker with, to give them Tank Hunters and Wrecker. But, they would probably get forced out in the future by a Fire Raptor or Leviathan Dread. I'm pretty sure I have enough Plasma guns laying around to make another 5 Man Drop Pod Support Squad. Then that would leave us with the last 10, which I was thinking of making a Veteran Tac Squad, who again would get forced out of the army due to "better" or more inline with what I want from the RoW units. Maybe eventually turned into a Command Squad and random Marines for where ever they are needed. Alternatively I was thinking I could just make this last 15 into another Tactical Squad.

For HQs I have no idea really what I want, probably a kitted out Praetor with Paragon Blade, maybe decide to hell with the 'meta' and give him a pair of Raven's Talons. Or I could take a Delegatus to save somepoints, kit him out and have him with the Talon's. For the single Consol allowed by the RoW, im not sure what I would want. Maybe a Siege Breaker for the probable ML Squad? I know that I would like to cram a Knight-Errant in, just because I like them thematically, and would love to have one working with my Raven Guard on Covert Operations.

I like the general structure, and it looks like it could be pretty good. For RG I'd probably avoid the leviathan for now and stick with the raptor as it fits the general theme of light, fast air assault. As for the praetor I'd look into the p.fist + paragon blade approach (as it has quickly become my go to)

as for my silly army planning points:

1) I have no idea how I want to continue my TS at the moment, though I am considering some White Scars battle brothers (more-so as an excuse to purchase khan when he's out ) I think I'll stop with where I'm at untill we get book 7 (2 large tactical squads, 5 cataphractii (as a command squad), praetor, 2 centurions, 1 TS contemptor

2) as for my death guard I'm still plodding along to my theme goals: Terminator Spam (numbers have recently rose, I need ~5-15 more cataphractii, 20 grave wardens, 5-15 more deathshroud, and 10 tartaros), Dread spam (Finished! from here anything else is just for funsies (though I would like a few more box dreads and a deredeo or two), artillery (I've decided beyond the 3 medusas I need 3-6 quad mortars so I can stop running my laser destroyers as proxies), infantry spam (I just need 1 more tac. squad and a bunch of support/heavy support squads (5 heavy flamers, 10 autocannons, 10 missile launchers, 10 flamers), and chem spam (mostly there, this is just me wanting more destroyers, phosphex, and maybe the jet with phosphex bombs)

3) solar auxilia is a mixed bag. At the moment I want the flamer malcador, 3 more russ's, and a bunch more infantry (I'd like to run 2-3 full tercios of lasrifles backed by my veletaris) beyond that, I'm still not 100% how i wanna run them

4) My mechanicum is a blank slate at the moment. before I get a ton of robots, I really want a strong 'human' element (human element being another magos, a dominus, multiple myrmidons (destructors and stabby), and 2 'full' squads of techpriest auxillia) both because I think it will look cool, and it will make the look and feel of my mechanicum different from the other local mechanicum player

Yeah, I agree, the Fire Raptor would fit the theme better. Maybe a Leviathan later on if I decide to expand to Shattered Legions. P.Fist and Paragon Blade with the Digi Lasers was something I had been looking into. Since I wont have the Dark Furies for a while I was also thinking of Cameleolining him and throwing him with the Vet Squad for when I infiltrate them.

1) I wish I could throw more out, but I've been sitting on the back burner waiting for the Prospero Book before deciding on what to do with the TS. Probably not much as Custodes will grab my attention.

2) Terminator Spam sounds great, its one of the things that pulls my attention to Death Guard. Us PotL just so I can cram as many Terminators into a list as possible. Its actually one of the things Im considering doing with the BaC Terminators if I decide against doing them as Raven Guard. Dread list seems like it could use a Leviathan if you dont have one, they just look so great and pack a nasty punch, plus with their Phosphex Launchers you could easily cram them into the Chem List.

3)Auxilia seems neat, but I honestly cant say I've looked into them enough to spit ball ideas enough. They can get Volkite Russ' though so I am all behind that.

4) Your Mech sounds opposite of how I want to run an Army. I want one or two Magos, then Thallax and Robots. Vorax with Chem Rounds for the Rotator Cannons in there somewhere too. For a human element I had considered Allied Militia, and with the right Provenances using Skitarii Modesl for them. Have you considered the possibility of allied Militia?

Working on it

I really like the point of this thread.
I like the Dread models FW makes, I'm not a fan of box naughts. I had an idea though, I'm a fan of the Thousand Sons, Iron Warriors, and AdMech. I'm going to take what units fit the theme of one of those best (Artillery with IW, AdMech with, well, AdMech, etc.).
I would classify them like this.

1.) Should I just make 2 separate Armies? Or should I paint half the units IW and the other half TS?

2.) I was thinking the IW could have more back-mid field units and bring in some front line AdMech to act as a buffer. (Thallax/Ursurax)

3.) Vice Versa for the Thousand Sons they would have more front line units and more artillery based AdMech (Thanatar/Castellax)

4.) I was also thinking of splitting my AdMech scheme. For the TS they would have more gold colors and color X, but for IW they would be silver with color X. Is this a good idea?

<Dynasty> ~10500pts
War Coven of the Coruscating Gaze ~3000pts
Thrice-Damned Plague Corps ~3250pts
Admech (TBN) ~3500pts +30k Bots and Ulator

1 leviathan? Not a half bad idea, although I HAVE 3 MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

as for the skitarii idea, Ehhhhhhh. By 'human element' I mean maybe 2 HQs, 4 as techpriest auxilia, and then 6-12 myrmidons. Beyond that, I'm not to sure as I know I will be going with lots of thallax/ursurax and other 'general' mech. stuff. I just wanted a fun way to stand out from the other local mech. player

@kharne

1) 2 separate armies. you get to play with the army's build styles more
2) Probably, though if you go this route, Mechanicus is simply to expensive to just be a 'buffer' imo
3) TS were super ranged/psychic focused (as opposed to Iron warriors who would bomb everything and then start marching)
4) it may work, though remember the key tennants: loyalist: Brighter reds (mephiston), silvers, gold and brass, etc. Traitor: darker reds, black, dark brass, etc.

1.) Well, I was planning on using it as one army (for now). So it would be TS, but have some IW looking duders.
2.) I should have specified, I meant as the the CC half of the army.
3.) True, I just like the thought of them slicing and dicing. (Maybe I'll switch IW and TS?) I'm going to wait for HH7 first.
4.) Loyalist=brighter, Traitor= Darker, got it

Thanks for the feedback

Well then, you'd best use those Dreads for all of that Phosphex Glory.

I see, well I guess that could work, if you want to stand apart.

Posted early.

If you want both, go for Shattered Legions I would say.
