MANCHESTER

Hi everyone,
Returning to 40k since I was a nipper and looking to put together a beginner list to go to 1000pts
Feel free to offer any opinions. Would be really appreciated.

HQ

Librarian (Ml 2) - 90 pts

Troops

Tactical squad - 195 pts
9x Bolter
1x plasma gun
Stg has melta bombs
Dedicated trans - Rhino

Tactical squad - as above

Elites

Sternguard (5 man squad) - 195 pts
Combi-melta/flamer mix
Dedicated trans - Drop pod

Assault termites - 230 pts
3x p/claws
2x s/shield & t/hammer
Drop pod

Fast Attack

Assault squad (5 man squad) - 95 pts
Jump packs
1x flamer
Stg with melta bombs

This list obviously has no armour apart from the dt rhinos for the tac squads.

Real idea would be to flat out the tac squads to mid field objectives in the rhinos, combat squad the tac squads where I need to camp any objectives on my dz.

Jump out the rhinos on objectives up field and use the Rhino for each to act as mobile cover or tank shock nearby enemy.

First turn drop pod in assault terminators and Sternguard. Termies between objectives and enemy Elites to tie down dangerous units. Sternguard behind their advance for anti armour and anti horde and also to offer a suicide unit to soak up fire and get the rest of my units in.

Assault squad in 2nd or 3rd turn to offer mobility in late game and to mop up where necessary.

Librarian will drop in with Sternguard to provide blessings and offer support as they'll be behind enemy lines and help negate vulnerability.

This is by no means a definitive list. I'd really appreciate constructive criticism but I need to battle test this list and see what its strengths and weaknesses are. Although I think I can see a few already but at 1000 points I prefer troops over unnecessarily expensive armour despite the firepower they dosh out especially considering the durability of the Elites in the list.

I'm probably way off what the list needs so I need help.

Thanks

Its a pretty good list, especially not having played in a while. Its got good strategic value and is ready for multiple threats. I'd caution using plasma guns in general, the ability to suicide plus it's low strength value makes them slightly less worth special weapons. I'd opt in for grav guns or meltas/flamers depending on the army you're facing. Definitely nothing wrong with a lack of armor in 1,000 points, I can't imagine someone throwing down a flyer in that small of a game but that would be your one big concern with no anti-air.

You're also pretty close to a couple of companies with the SM rulebook, and you might be able to pull out some free special rules just by looking into them and shifting some stuff around. Free special stuff is the way to go in a lot of cases these days.

Overall great list in my opinion probably already ready to throw down.

I just some general ideas for competitive play. I think you have a really good list for a first timer.

I'd save points by going scout squads over tactical, they'd fulfill the exact same objective holding role as the tac.

Deepstrike the terminators over a drop pod, or just drop them all together. (They ain't as tough as they used to be, and getting them into combat even with drop pod/deepstrike isn't as easy as it seems.) Bikes would be better for mobility/getting into combat/tanking damage.

I'd recommend some devastators too.

Thanks for the replies.

I did worry about the gets hot issue with the plasmas but I always used to like the ability to rapid fire an AP2 weapon. Plus you can now move AND rapid fire. last time I played you used to have to stand still to get those double shots.

I did contemplate scouts... I actually already have a scout sniper unit. One of the first set of models I bought the other week, always loved the look of them. My only issue was their survivability especially at mid table objectives.

I probably agree with you about bikes having had another look over the codex. Better weapon options probably helps and savings points by losing the drop pod on the terminators would allow me to give them some real hefty gear.

From personal experience as well as almost never seeing them taken: I'd avoid deploying Assault Terminators in anything other than an Assault Vehicle (which pretty much limits you to deploying them by Land Raiders or a FW unit that's an Assault Vehicle). Instead, I'd probably make that a Regular Terminator Squad rather than a Terminator Assault Squad simply because Deep Striking a Terminator Squad (or deploying them via Drop Pod or another vehicle) is viable because they can shoot on the same turn the arrive by Deep Strike (or Drop Pod in this case), while Terminator Assault Squads have no ranged capabilities which means they are useless the turn they arrive by Deep Strike or disembark from a vehicle that isn't an Assault Vehicle. Also, foot slogging Terminator Assault Squads is dangerous - even if they all have Storm Shields - because they only have one wound.

TLDR? Replace the Terminator Assault Squad with a Terminator Squad so you can take ranged weapons.

Other than that, I reckon it's a fairly solid list, especially for a beginner's list at 1,000 points
