As it stands, I only have the Start Collecting Astra Militarum box set and the Astra Militarum codex, which I bought today. I had stopped playing 40k last December. The Tank Shock event being ran by my FLGS caught my interest and that's why I'm getting back in. The even starts with a Build A Model Day tomorrow. After this Saturday, I need 500 Points for the small skirmish games. The major, and final, event is going to be a huge 1750 point battle. As it stands, at most I can get around 365 out of what I got. I know I should buy more infantry so I can expand beyond the formation from the box, but I was wondering what else I should get.

The meta at my FLGS is mostly Tau. Besides the seven Tau players, there are around three Nid players, one Space Wolves player, one Orks Player, one Grey Knights player, one Khorne Daemonkin player and one Necrons Player. There are also three players who own more than one army and it's hard to predict what they'll bring. One has Imperial Fists, Astra Militarum and Dark Angels, one has Tyranids, Grey Knights and Iron Hands and the third has Tau, Orks and Blood Angels.

I have an idea of how to deal with the Power Armor armies, since I've played Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Dark Angels and Vanilla Marines throughout most of my time playing 40k. However, I have no idea how to deal with the others. Everytime I play against them, except for Orks, I get my Imperium loving ass handed to me.

My suggestion would be to get Advisors. Specifically, 3 Priests and three Primaris Psykers. They can power up an IG blob something fierce.

You are one of the few armies that can actually match Tau Firepower. HIGH STR, HIGH AP is what you do.
My typical build for an IG Infantry platoon is:

40 Guardsman + 4 LasCannons + 4 meltabombs + 4 Power Axes + 3 Psykers + 3 Priests

This creates a VERY intimidating unit that can roll forward, leaving Lascannons in place while doing so, and can opening the enemy.

Add artillery. Wyverns are BOSS. I mean seriously. a pair of them will do WORK. a Manticore is also recommended pretty strongly.

I'm also building the Leman Russ I got from the Start Collecting box set as a Vanguisher, since then Tank Shock games will mostly focus on Vehicles and encourages players to bring them.

I wouldnt make it a vanquisher. You can get anti tank so many places. It seems a waste to mount it on the tank. If you needed a punchy tank that isnt quite so one dimensional, I might recommend the Exterminator. It hits hard but can do more to more target types and can still have the lascannon.

Just got back from the Build a Tank day. Kinda wish I saw your post before I left, but I left for the event at 11am and your post was made around 11:50am. My tank is a Vanquisher and I have no easy means of changing out the cannon.

Someone at my FLGS also heard I was playing IG, so he gave me a bunch of stuff. Looks like 3 or 4 Infantry Platoons, 10 Heavy Weapon Teams, 20 or so Veterans/Stormtroopers, 1 Commissar and 2 Psykers. The Stormtroopers are very Melta heavy and the Heavy Weapon Teams is 1 Heavy Bolter, 4 Autocannons and 5 Lascannons.
