Hi. Just heard of a game called Malifaux, wondering if the community could tell me what it is like and how to get started playing it. I may start a small force alongside my Orks.

Malifaux is a skirmish level game (5 - 10 pieces each player) played on a 3' x 3' board. It uses a deck of cards instead of dice as a randomizer and incorporates "turn of the century" (1900s) themes such as the Wild West, steampunk, Victorian fashion, and other things.

How to begin? Check out Wyrd's website and learn about the various factions. Some you may love others perhaps not. Once you see a faction you like, get a "crew box" and start with that. You can play a few games with only your crew box until you learn the rules. Then you can explore which models would make good additions/changes to your crew and go from there.

As for where to buy, check your LFGS to see if they carry Malifaux. If not, there are places like miniaturemarket.com that can provide you what you need at a discount.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everybody for the comments! My interest in this game has peaked because of its affordability and its rules! Does anybody have a recommended faction? The wiki offers great insight but I'd like to hear everyone's opinions.

I always suggest picking the faction that appeals to you most, you can always figure out a way to win with whichever one you choose.

Going down the list
-Guild is probably the most straightforward and the most traditional shooty
-Ressers are very tough and summon-oriented. This means they'll be more expensive since you get more guys than you start with, and a bigger collection means more flexibility summoning
-Neverborn are pretty obvious based on their look- scary and melee
-Arcanists tend to be construct-heavy. Don't really like them so can't comment more.
-Outcasts have lots of weird themes and a lot of overlap with ressers. Probably not the best faction to start with since they don't mesh with each other amazingly.
-Gremlins are devastating but fairly difficult to play. Likely very high death counts on both sides.
-Ten Thunders are a big mix, so tend towards low support and more independent models.

Personally, I most like playing guild, gremlins, and outcasts.

The rules have just been released for free as well. So download that, grab a couple of poker decks, and grab a couple of crew boxes you like, and you should be good to go (assuming you have some form of inches measuring tape/stick from another wargame).

Oh my gosh, that's a legit Malifaux resource!

I thought it was a joke link and almost knee-jerk modded it so glad I decided to click first

Named for a gremlin's ability. Creepy thing is, mosquitoes can use it too.

Thanks everybody for all the feedback! I've decided to start a Crew led by Marcus of the Arcanists. I may use Ork colors on the models though. Cheers.

Lots of fun, there, though you'll basically immediately want a pack of bayou gremlins and a slop hauler to really get proper mileage out of that starter- those gremlins are fragile and best in swarms (from my limited experience running him).

Another suggestion to add to it is The Kin, Ophelias box. It's packed with powerful models that Som'er can make use of. Bayou Gremlins and Lenny also work well with Ophelia.

Another gremlin player here, as you can guess from the name I'm a big Somer fan

Gremlins are a great faction to play, they a have a ton of different models that suit a different playstyle, and some of the sculpts are amazing.

I'd recommend picking up some slop haulers, as they work with somer brilliantly. He makes more gremlins, but they'll need healing up.

Have a look at pull my finger, it explains the different ways of playing the different masters, and good synergies.

Welcome to Malifaux, it's brilliant!
