Small scale figs (10mm, 6mm) require a different set of techniques then 28mm or larger. Don't try and do subtle blends of multiple highlights. Stick with a primary color and one highlight, with a wash or shade to define some detail. Go for high contrast between the base and the fig, at 6mm your eye will have a hard time telling the miniature and the base apart if you match them up to much.
