How much space do the e-versions of codicies and apps take up? Do I need a really beefy amount of storage to be able to hold the entire library of game rules if I was going to get say, an iPad strictly for gaming?

What's everybody's experience?

they're pretty big. The Codex: Necron is 166MB as a .mobi file from Black Library. The BRB is 327MB and the (old) Codex: Space Marines was 268MB. Even the lightweight Codex: Inquisition has 70MB. But an actual iPad has a pretty big storage IIRC, so you should be fine.

But if you're asking for experience with them - I stopped using PDFs. I tried it with my phone, with two tablets and a kindle - using physical books is just that much more convenient. Yes, I have to carry them, but it's just that much more comfortable once you're playing (I still have to look up quite a bunch of stuff).

And I love my kindle (haven't bought a novel on paper in years) and I'm a huge nerd when it comes to tech. But this time, paper clearly beats rock/silicon for me.

When you say PDF, do you mean just straight up PDF's that you have to scroll through, or the "enhanced" versions that have you click on the rule heading to read the rule, etc? I feel like those wouldn't be so bad to flip through in a casual setting, which is what I'm looking at.

Also, I was thinking of a 16GB iPad, and wondering if that would be enough to have the rulebook and a few codicies on it. It looks like it should be from the sizes you mentioned.

I have the BRB, C:SM, C:ECW and the Angels of Death supplement on my 16 gb iPad. No problems.

If you are worried about storage space could you go with an external hard drive and a generic pad with a USB port...
Might be a little ugly but never have to worry about space.

I have an iPad mini 16mb that I mainly use for traveling with codexs. I haven't run into any issues with storage yet but it's not like I'm storing videos on the thing.

I like that the e-versions (and enhanced versions which are occassionally useful) are now starting to be updated for free. It saves me some money and it's easier to carry a single iPad mini if needed.

However I find I do miss the BRB as a paperback. So whenever 7.5 rules or a main army codex comes out I'll be buying the paperback. However all the little supplements I'll just stick to the eformat for ease of travel and the fact I don't need them that often.

I don't know about the ipad versions, not having one to try.

For completion, I have the iPad Gamers Edition DA codex, and it's 83mb, as well as the Enhanced edition Necrons, which is 686mb. So the lightweight versions could likely all fit on one iPad, but the fancy versions won't. Well, maybe the will on a newer iPad, but if you have an older iPad 2 like me, they won't.
