Hi buddies. Apologies if this is the wrong section of the forum, but I had always wondered if anyone bothered calculating points value of all Start Collecting Boxes? To know their points range, barebone and with some points spent on equipment. If they are anything similar to each other I intend to buy and paint a few to have, when my buddies come over so that they can pick an army and play with me, with whatever army they like. I believe those boxes are something in 500 points range? Which ones match each other fairly closely in points value and balance as well, to pair them? Once again apologies if it's a wrong section of the forum.

You should download an app called battlescribe on your phone or tablet. It gives point values for every unit in all the 40k armies. It's really a great tool. Then you can just look at the starter box you want and punch in all of the units itbhas into battlescribe. It will even give you the special weapons and loadout options for each unit. Just because x unit costs y points doesn't mean the value won't change if you give x unit different wargear etc. But I do think most boxes hover around 500.

I've got it, and points wise is not as much of an issue as balance is. Even if same points, they can be terribly unbalanced, so was wondering if any of you confronted two Start Collecting Kits against each other. I would need 3 for fights. Mathhammer would suffice but I really have no experience, can't tell the balance. I am surprised noone bothered to test it yet.

tau empire Ethereal on drone, 3 crisis suits, 10 fire warriors = ~216 pts bare. Amped up, add a couple hundred points. 1 Crisis suit becomes a commander, the others become solo shas'vres, add drones to the squad or build them as breachers for the 5++, etc. . . plus the weapons on the suits, which can add up quickly.

I suppose, with the most basic forms of everything in the kit, you could get the Space Marines around 500 points. Not sure about any of the others.

5250 pts
3850 pts
Deathwatch: 1500 pts
Imperial Knights: 375 pts
30K 2500 pts

Skitarii I'm running is 400 points though that's with upgrades. With no upgrades it comes in at 295.

I think the Khorne daemkn one is around 500 points. The Nurgle one is about 400, maybe less. And that's with some enhancements, but not going insane on upgrades, and assuming you make the Khorne one a Skullcannon so you can have the herald on foot.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Yup, 400-500 points with upgrades tends to be the area they get to.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Ork Start Collecting I got to around 360 points with a few upgrades, but I'm sure selecting more will get me to 500. They are great sets to get started, I really love the boxes as they make getting a new army up and running really easy.

WYSWYG the lowest the SM one is 365 points. That’s fielding the dread as basic, not venerable (with the PC, cheapest gun in the kit), with no guns on the tacs.

A more moderate point total (HIWPI) is 450. Upgrade the captain to a relic blade, dread to venerable with an AsC and HF, ML/M, c-melta on the tacs.

Max from the box is going to be a little over 550, depending on how crazy you want to go. Upgrade the captain to a chapter master, give him the relic bolter. Extra armor on the dread, grav or plas on the tacs, and CC weapon for the sarge.

With work you might be able to stretch it up to 600, but the last ~50 points are just going to be spending for the sake of blowing points. You could do things like break the tacs into 2x5 men squads, both with tricked out sarges.
