So been playing some Alpha Legion in 30k lately. Been playing against my mate only as we both get our armies built and painted (a lot more forgiving for "this model is actually X because I am waiting on bits). Anyway, he plays fists, and has a Spartan that he loves to fill with termies, at 1500pts.

Last night when we played I got first turn, we were doing the HH mission where you get VPs for killing units and thats about it - First turn I wiped out a heavy weapons team, a full 10 man tactical squad, and half a 15 man tactical squad. Make jack all difference - his Spartan just slowly wittled away at all the things with armour, Termies and Centurion jump out and minced a bunch of gak in combat - kind of irritating!
What things are good for killing a Spartan - he runs it with ceramite all the time, and the flare shield only occaisionally.

I have been running with a list something like this:

Praetor in Cataphracti Armour w/Fist and Combi Bolter
Primus Medicae in Cataphracti Armour

Mortis-Contemptor with 2/ Assault Cannon

10 Tactical vets with 2x plasma and a fist on the seargent
5-10 Lernean Terminators with power fists

10 Headhunters with a heavy bolter

Possibly a Vindicator depending on how many termies I take (if I run 5 then yes, if I run 10 then no).


Now obviously there is not enough anti armour in here. Thinking I need to buy myself a couple more of the tac sprues from Calth to try and get my troop points down a bit maybe?
I don't see many people running the Alpha Legion terminators, but why? You get Stubborn, you get an Extra WS and you get Volkite Chargers - I think they end up being 5 points more per model than a normal cataphracti.

I love the look of the Sicaran Battle Tank - but that wont really help me much, surely that is better off kitted out with HB's and mincing troops?

Anyway, sorry, bit all over the place here - what the hell do I do against the Spartan Death Star, are my Termies gak or not?

For scragging Flareshield spartans, try:

- Lightning Strike Fighter with Kraken Penetrator Rounds
- Glaive
- Graviton Rapiers
- In fact any graviton based weapons (Land speeders with Graviton Guns)
- Sicaran Venator

All of them are excellent at cracking armour and gravitons have the juicy haywire rules. Graviton Land speeders and Sicaran Venators have the speed to get around the flare shield. The shock pulse of the Venator is particularly nasty, so it will be a priority target. In fact, the Sicaran Venator is brilliant for all vehicles, especially superheavies. The glavie will just annihilate the Spartan and the Lightning can pop one in a single turn with some lucky rolls.

Edit:
Drop pod in a Leviathan nearby armed with a Melta lance or Graviton Bombard and Siege drill - it'll tear through that Spartan

I have only managed to get into combat with it once, and then I punched it to death with fists.
The issue is, chances are he will be able to unload and charge me before I can charge his spartan.

Initially I havent been sold on the venator, the more I look into it the more I think its one of my better options. While I don't think it looks quite as cool as a regular Sicaran it has far less overlap with the rest of my army, so would probably be a better choice. Somewhere down the line I would add a regular Sicaran just because I have wanted one for so damn long. People generally just Venators without sponsons right? And they are considered a better choice than the laser destroyer vindicator?
