Greetings once again,
Well I've finally received my BaC in the mail. Opening the box and see all those crisp models waiting to be assembled took me back to the time I first walked into a GW and played a demo as a fresh faced newb almost 15 years ago. Haven't played a game in a couple of years I can truly say I feel all excited about starting again. Sry if that's too emotional lol but it was one hell of a feeling and memory.

Now on to WAR! After a great struggle of waiting, in that time I fought another war. What freaking legion to pick. And Night Lords it is.

So my first and BIG question is......how have they changed from the Black Books (which I have 1-5 pdf) to the Red books?(don't have) I ask because after watching a battle report between NL and AL, the AL player realized half way threw that the head hunters had changed by losing preferred enemy.

That's what I need to know first before bombarding everyone with questions on rules & army composition.

Would it be acceptable to use the Chaplain as Praetor/Sevatar by replacing the crozius top with a chainblade/sword? Model wise and base size wise?

I found that you can buy some bits and do a ton of great conversions for Night Lords.

Just getting the Helmets for 8 GBP on Forgeworld offers a lot of options.

For the Chaplain, I was able to use a chainsword and convert the crozius into a chain glaive.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, there have been a couple changes to the legion specific rules in the new red book. For the NL, here are the following changes:
Night Lords
• ‘From the Shadows’ confers 5+ cover save, use to be 6+
• ‘Talent for Murder’ confers +1 to hit and wound, use to be just to wound
• Terror squads gain ‘Precision Strike’
• Sevatar has his additional psyker rules from the FAQ added to his profile, also gains precision strike
Now, I can't confirm these because I don't own the new red book (yet), but the thread I got them from is here on dakka and shouldn't be too hard to find if you want more evidence.

As for converting the chaplain, sure why not? That would work fine. It might be worth springing for some of the NL helmets as Thulsa said in order to make your HQs stand out a bit more.

Btw, there is a new legion specific rite of war in book 6 for the NL. It lets you take raptor squads as troops and you can give any squad in the detachment Fear for 25 points. Not too shabby

Thanks for the responses. Wow looks like a win for NL. Are units/gear costs the same otherwise any list I come up with is likely to change whenever I convince myself to buy the AoD red book. :/

Night Lords are awesome, but I am biased. Do remember to give vexilias to units that can take them. Night Lords have the disadvantage that if their warlord dies, every unit on the board rolls for morale to run away and unlike 40k marines in 30k dont get ATSKNF and will run away.

Terror squads rock. I really didnt pay much attention to them at first and then I used them with their ROW and I was impressed. Night Raptors are one of the best jump pack units in the game, just dont go overboard on chain glaives.

Sevatar is one of the coolest characters in the game.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Surfing the Tervigon Wave...on a baby.

Night Lords...are a lovely force for character. So much that my vast Death Guard blob shrunk a little with my second BaC set...as I decided to do one squad as kitted up NL tacticals, the Chaplain as a Chain-glaive wielding Centurion and decided to turn a small assault Squad into some Raptors. Nice little ally force...plus it fits well to cover some gaps with my Death Guard.

Now only a CSM player.

Anymore specifics on that RoW in book 6? Raptors as troops would be awesome. Cruze and a crap load of raptors, that would be freaking cool.

I plan to use the current 40k chaos raptors as their JP's already look 30kish.

I'm looking at a lot where I'll be picking up 20.

I'm not sure how much detail I can give here on dakka, but I guess if I say too much the mods can correct me.

The new ROW allows for:
1) raptor squads to be troops
2) any squad to buy trophies for the cost of five melta bombs to give them fear
3) any infantry squad of 10 or more models can buy a Kharybdis Assault Claw as a DT.

The limitations are:
1) models with the Legion Astartes (NL) rule must always declare a charge if there is an enemy that they can hurt within 12"
2) the detachment cannot take a fortification or an allied Space Marine detachment,
3) the detachment cannot be part of the loyalist faction.

Honestly the limitations don't seem bad for the benefit of being able to give your ENTIRE army fear and take lots of raptors.
