Hi all, just pondering whether IG players have used this and had it do critical damage to your opponents army. By 'critical damage' I don't mean you one shot his/her army but took out a blob, HQ, etc., which has meant your opponent has little chance of victory?
Or is it just a point sink?
Thanks

Its big problem is its still a single blast so and only do 1 hit per model. So against things like vehicles and MCs it only does a single hull point or wound against such units and against units of models you end up rolling a couples 1s and so won't wipe out the units hit by it. Those few failed wounds also generally let the important character like ICs escape because they can just LOS! those wounds away.

It's worthless. But I love using them as neutral objectives in fluff games (Capturing the objective gives you a chance to fire the missiles. Works great for apoc game)

Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

I used to love it, but its just a case of how the game has evolved away from it. It really needs to be updated to Str. D.

The Deathstrike doesn't need Str D. What it needs to do is just straight up award VPs if you manage to launch the damn missile - the idea being that it flies off and completely obliterates a huge chunk of your opponent's army off screen. Because using intercontinental ballistic missiles to shoot at dudes within visual range is unspeakably stupid.

It works for me and I swear by it. It either attracts fire so more important tanks can survive. Or they can't get past your defence and it wipes out half the board on turn 2. Against marines it isn't that great but Nids or guard get decimated.

Does deathstrike still have a 24" minimal range? Because that was stupid. Also one shot only, making it useless for most of the game after its been used. You better hope that missile kills something important. Also, it should totally be strength D, as its meant to be a anti-titan nuke.

It still has a minimal range. I think it is 24". Cant say really, I have better thins to waste points on.
The Deathstrike suffers from having a stupid launching sequence meaning that you rarely ever get to actually fire the damn thing because by the time it is fuelled and ready to go the enemy is already in your face or they have taken it out. If you do manage to shoot the enemy with it you usually only catch a rear lines support unit (such as Devastators) at best. Whats more, the missile is only S 10 which makes no sense at all.
To be useful the Deathstrike needs to be S D (or D+2), ignores cover and the game needs to be played on a car park.

If they wanted a nuke they should have just made it into an orbital bombardment type thing, instead of having a physical model with a minimal range that took up half the table. But nope, got to try to sucker fools into spending money on a pretty but useless model. Is the manticore any better now? I barely remember it being less dumb than the deathstrike. It had something like 4 uses, S10 AP4 large blasts and a minimal range of 12" It wasn't great, but it was more practical than the deathstrike. They should really bring back Epic, if they want to start getting into long range death machines and the type of game they are forcing onto 40k. Supposedly GW is bring back specialist games, so hopefully they will start churning out 6mm models.

The Manticore is pretty good when compared - it still has 4 shots but each one does D3 S10 AP4 large blasts with a minimal range of 24" and a maximum range that you will never ever use - like lots of IG guns!

A Deathstrike has no business shooting anything at ranges you'd see on the tabletop (actually neither does artillery for that matter). So if the thing launches it should fly off and explodify something important far far away. Congratulations, you launched the Deathstrike before the enemy could stop you and blew up the enemy's command center/hive city/landing site/fortress monastery/flagship/Emperor titan/whatever - you get +D3 VPs.

Yeah, that'll be better. You know, that would be a pretty interesting gimmick for the guard, if they had units that generated victory points instead of having an effect on the battle field. Like, basilisks give 1VP every time you roll a 5 for them in the shooting phase or something, but they deal no damage to enemies on the table as they are shelling elsewhere.

I used my deathstrike a few times, mostly in Apoc.
The only time its done anything of worth was back in 5th edition, it wiped out a massive chunk of Eldar who were funneling around a piece of terrain.
Unfortunatly the Eldar player still had some powerful character who survived it and made it into melee with my artillery and troops. It was GG.
THe Apoc matches are where it shines, when a Vortex missile Drops on something and it gets annihilated. I used to make a GK player go nuts by dropping it on justicar Thon or whatever his name it. Would confuse the hell out of him due to the vortex vs "getting back up" rule he had.

The Manticore is funny fielded in the Mont'ka artillery formation that allows you to give it ignores cover. AP4 is less of an issue due to the bigger focus on invuln saves in the current game.
