I've been toying with the notion of making some Ultramarines, and took a look at Marneus Calgar. He's pretty darn expensive but I was thinking that choosing Storm of Fire, and dropping him in with a Command Squad of 5 flamer guys would be able to clear out just about any dudes in someone's backfield. He can tank lots of wounds throw out 5 Str8/AP2 attacks at Init 5 (fancy Gauntlets). Then he could keep doing the Storm of Fire thing, and choose a big biker squad for rending bolters, or Land Speeders with heavy bolters, etc. Anyone tried this at all? Tigurius has that Trait also but he's not the durable beast that Calgar is.

Calgar is stupid awesome. Tigurius is cheaper and stuff (not to mention that Calgar needs to get to melee to help earn points back) but he's definitely worth it.

The problem is reliably getting him into CC, can't be foot slogging against all these fast Eldars, SM bikes and etc.

Probably best throw him into a Centstar, gate with Draigo or roll on fulmination for electrodisplace

Putting him in a drop pod with some assualt cents would be a very scary thing to go up against.

To be honest, I liked him better when he buffed the detachment more with the choose to pass/fail morale checks.

Now he's just a super pricy beatstick without much mobility. He'll wreck face in CC decently but will struggle to get there in the first place.

He buffs everyone still with the extra doctrine uses. That's better utility than stupid Morale shenanigans.

I miss the morale shenanigans as well. Fun times.

The extra doctrine is more important when running a CAD or other non-gladius formations. An Ultramarine Gladius is already hitting the tactical doctrine 3 times for the demi-co, do they need a 4th? So in some lists it’s just gilding the lily.

But he’s a powerhouse in CC, good army-wide buffs, some nice tricks. Points are reasonable for what you get. I’ve had fun the few times I’ve fielded him (which admittedly is not very often.)

MC Calgar is the supreme badass and spiritual leige of everything in power armour, SOB, Chaos, whatever, everyone needs to bow down to this beautiful 'bar-steward' right now to avoid the inevitable powerfist pounding that's incoming. "Calgar is love, Calgar is life."

S8 at initiative with 2+/4++ (and if you choose is some sweet FNP action to boot) and for some ungodly reason AP2 storm bolters just to slight Abbadon, eternal warrior and a whole host of powers makes this guy -> THE GUY. previously the only hope for survival against this guy is to run away and hope the God in blue decided he had better things to do... but not any more.

Running an allied Callidus assassin that infiltrates 1" away and then having a Librarius Conclave use Electrodisplacement for a turn 1 charge is always good. Throwing Calgar onto a skyshield landing pad and using the power that lets you move terrain (forgot its name) for a turn 1 charge is glorious, or he could just be put into a pod with every other ultramarine you have for an almighty alphastrike.

In all seriousness, he's expensive but he damn good fun to use
