I am seeing the leaks for the new flyer rules and all I can think is this has to be a joke. I can just imagine the following conversation going on at GW.

GW employee Steve: Hey Carl, you know what would be funny?

GW employee Carl: what's that Steve?

Steve: what if we figured out a way to get 40k players to play rock paper scissors for decisions?

Carl: that would be awesome, let's release some rules with that in it.

Steve: let's make an entire book for a whole new phase of the game on how to play our rock paper scissors mini game and make it mandatory!

Carl: Steve, you are so smart!

*Carl and Steve high five*

40K has been RPS for quite some time. That's what a "hard counter" is: the rock to your scissors.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

This. RPS isn't new, it's been around for awhile.

Its pseudo mandatory. If you don't want to, but your opponent does he's allowed to roll off for it.

Sadly this isnt anything new, its just gotten dramatically worse over the last ~4 or so years. 40k has really become a gigantic mess of a shitshow.

Actually, the rulebook says both players agree to the kind of game they want to play.

Nothing or anything is allowed, but it has to be agreed upon.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Yup, both opponents have to purchase, build and paint 1 flyer of each type. Then they chant "BOMBER ,ATTACK, FIGHTER, SHOOT!" and then whoop one of the 3 models out form behind their back. The winner gets 1 VP and can deploy their flyer in their next turn.

Yes. In the previous version of the "dogfighting" rules they actually suggested that you roll a die to see what your pilot does instead of picking because it's just R/P/S and there's no possible strategy involved.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Good thing it's not mandatory and will probably be ruled out in tournaments.

Next to that you can agree with your opponent on how to go about it. Just like you do now about many things.

So nothing changes, the end.

Sad to say I could believe this of gw after the AoS release.

Reckon this travesty of a release (*cough* cashgrab *cough*) will see about as much use as the original DftS.

Feedback to the facebook page. Maybe they'll get the idea and start employing people with some vague clue what they're doing.

Cool. It's a campaign book basically. If I don't have any Flyers or refuse to use it, then nothing changes.

I assume so, yes.

Bit of a weird one where you can factor in - say - a Stormraven as an assault vehicle that also provides anti-air... but in some games/rules it loses skyfire.

You'd need to know you were playing this variant in advance and build for it a bit.

Can't see it being particularly popular.

Stormravens as anti-air is stupid. They are not interceptor craft. They're slow, ungainly, and their guns are either too-short-ranged or pointing the wrong way to be used as interceptors.

Maybe on the other hand, if you're a grey knight or blood angel player it's all you have. because GW apparently decided to give the stormraven to space marines, but not return the favor by giving the storm talon to those two factions...

I play vanilla marines and grey knights and even I'M kinda salty about that (grey knights makes a degree of sense but blood angels SHOULD get storm talons_

Storm Talons are also Ground Attack Craft and crappy interceptors. That's why they've given you the Stormhawk now.

Anyway, Grey Knights have no room to complain. They have a plastic flying assault transport.

My flier is a resin ground attack craft with a single anti-air mount, which, by the way, is a heavy stubber. S4. And I don't have an Assault Transport at all. So don't try whining to me about how you don't have an interceptor. That don't wash. You'll just have to bring some allies like every other poor baby in the Imperium.
