Is this true?

Very nearly - the two dedicated detachments for Deathwing (the Redemption Force and Strike Force) both require everything in them to start in reserves.

Now you can make the Strike Force using Ven Dreads in Drop Pods to hold out for the first turn, but it's risky.

The other alternative is to just play Unbound.

Unfortunately Quanar, unless they FAQ'ed it, this is not the case. The Deathwing rule overrides the Drop Pods rule and forces it to come in Turn 2 or later.

This is true for the Redemption Force (it includes a sentence telling us to ignore the normal arrival rules for Drop Pods), but the Deathwing Strike Force (the detachment, p158) does not have that restriction.

Funny enough with Strikeforce Ultra, Loganwing, the Archangels Formations, Chosen of Abaddon formation, and GK terminators being made flat out into troops, Dark Angels are now the ONLY Space Marine army unable to field pure-terminator forces.

EDIT: At least the only ones who don't have to rely on something being on the board on turn 1.

Just do what I do run a fluff list.

I run ravenwing Deathwing

Use the ravenwing with a 3+ jink to get the terminal up close.

They really dicked over DW this go around since they have the option to take a LR but no way to enter play with it, can't even slog across the field with them unless you take them in a normal FOC.

+ termies are in a bad place just because of the amount of AP but for me rule of cool over wrote that so I still build/run them

To many unpainted models to count.

You can also use Vanilla space marines to run !not-Deathwing with the 1st Company Taskforce. It's pretty much the same except you're not forced to go into deepstrike, get Fearless and Fear for free instead of paying for it, and don't have to buy a HQ.

NoS? I'd say go for it. You'd be missing an HQ, as Azrael is technically a Lord of War, so I'd just run one of the TH/SS Termies as Belial and paint him up special.

Otherwise that's a decent starting force for da, a little Termie heavy, but good. Run the RW bikes/Land speeder in the formation that gives the bikes +1 BS against every target the Land Speeder "paints".

That's not too bad for just $150. And it gets you a pretty decent force, if a bit heavy on the Termies. As mentioned above, you would need a true HQ because Azrael is a Lord of War. I'm not sure but what you should see about swapping out the MM on the speeders for Heavy Bolters, and use the saved points to switch out the Meltaguns for Grav Guns. Grav bikes are wicked good!

If you are taking th/ss just take a knight squad, and tos a Chaplin in terminator armor in there, also try taking a command squad with a banner and put a lib or Chap in there, if ou wanna be fluffy, take baliel but he is kinda crap right now and if you run him without his sb and sword his warlord trait is pointless so.

To many unpainted models to count.

The thing that is much more upsetting is that neither of these Deathwing formations allow you to take Land Raiders. Like at all. I know more than a few DW players that are, rightfully so, upset over the fact their $74 USD model is absolutely worthless.

Land Raiders were already gak in the first place, and running a pure force looks terrible. Plus Dreads with Pods get around it.

You honestly lost nothing.

That's why you take the triple Landraider formation

Except for a legitimate way to play a fluff list. We lost quite a bit.

No, you can still legitimately play this fluff list, but you will just lose every game (well, unless playing pure LOTD and they get the first turn)!

Here's a man who remembers the good ol days of 3rd edition, where we just had Terminators, Dreads and Raiders in every slot :3

Right, so because I played Deathwing, an army whose SOLE POINT IS THAT IT'S ALL TERMINATORS AND LAND RAIDERS, and now can't use them, I lost nothing? Nay, sir we have lost one of the core tenets of our codex and now with the new batgak that is the Ravenwing rules are on our way to becoming another TFG SM Chapter.

Yeah, but you can't deploy the Deathwing in the Land Raiders, which kinda defeats the point. Gone are the days of bone white and green all over the place. My brother can't even run his Deathwing Contemptor Mortis anymore due to it not having the DW rule. Adding DW seems like an easy errata though. I just wish DW Land Raiders weren't gone. So what if it was subpar, it was awesome.

Also, DW got a nice buff through the Veil of Time psychic power. Run several DW Librarians and attach them to squads with a few storm shields, and they will become quite scary.
