A friend recently started the hobby (as in had his first battle today). He was a bit overwhelmed but determined to learn. Now, I remember there being a general overview of the game that's only a couple of pages long.

There was a checklist with things you have to do before a battle and also a quick summary of what a turn looks like. It wasn't a GW product but something someone cooked up himself.

You don't have to be happy when you lose, just don't make winning the condition of your happiness.

No, it wasn't an simplification of the rules. It were the general rules of the BRB compressed on how to play a turn into a couple of pages. It didn't have special rules in it or anything, but rather what things you have to do in which phase (pre-game, movement, shooting and assault phases).

Don't know about the specific document you're talking about, but the Dark Vengeance box set has some pretty good stuff on this.
