Has anyone had success in taking something like marine decals and overlaying them or combining in other ways? If so, is there any thing to do other than placing one on another? The reason i ask is that an upside down ultra marines decal ( or would it be right side up) with the a V roman-numeral decal over it to create an alpha legion symbol.

Only if the decal is on a clear backdrop, otherwise it might look off. Apply gloss varnish, let dry evenly as possible, apply 1st decal, let dry, apply lahmian medium and rid of any bubbles, let dry, apply 2nd decal, apply lahmian medium.

Any reason for the gloss between decals? I have always found decals to be quite glossy to begin with so just place the 2nd decal straight on top of the first (after letting the microsol finish doing it's work on the 1st). I've combined decals, in many aircraft kits the markings are made from multiple decals that you stack on top of each other. If the edges of the decal overlap then it's harder to hide the edge, so if you can trim the carrier film flush to the decal design it'll be better (particularly on the 2nd decal), but that's not always an option.

Mainly to hide the clear sections of the top decal and avoid silvering
You could probably do it all at once and keep it wet

You have to seal each decal so you don't damage it when you apply the next one on top of it and to give the second decal the best possible surface to adhere to.

Ah ok, I guess it might reduce the appearance of the carrier film. As I said I usually try and trim off all the carrier film if at all possible, but not always possible.

Can't say I've ever damaged a decal when laying another one on top of it. I usually do a few microsol applications to any decal, so by the time I'm laying the 2nd one down the 1st one is unlikely to be damaged by the microsol I apply to the 2nd one.
