I'm building a kdk army and want to get a maulerfiend/forgefiend, I just don't know what to make with the kit. 3 blasts at str 8 ap 2 is nice but the maulerfiend just seems cooler, but less effective. Can anyone tell me their experiences with their assorted " 'fiend " units?

The 3 blast fiend is probably the worst of the bunch. Found for killing tanks the gat cannon one is far more reliable for the job. Mauler fiends are not bad but you need more than 1 to make any real dent.

Im about halfway through getting my KDK army going and I have found that 1 fiend is never enough. 2 is good. One to distract and the other to actually make it there. When they do hit those likes, they are nasty. Plus a 12in move can make some first turn charges possible.

Maulerfiend is better than the Forgefiend imo. Plama is risky with the Gets Hot!, and the Dakkafiend has low BS. Maulerfiends are very fast and compliment a fast rushing KDK army quite well.
Being a Daemon you get a 5++, which is handy, and in a clutch you can throw a Grimoire on it (if you run Daemon allies)

Krak grenades never do ok against maulerfiend before. Unless we are talking about are more than 10 scouts / Tatical marines, because one krak grenade marine only have 1/13.5 chances to actually glance the maulerfied (and 1/9 chances to do anything against other AV12 WS3 walkers). However, haywire and meltabomb is totally another story.
Back to the topic, Imho, for your kdk army, take two or more maulerfiend, run them alongside your D-thirster (I assume you defintely gonna run this "great big-bad" right  ), that will provide great target saturation for your opponent, whic all these three things are lethal in assault. I don't think forgefiend is good, 3 S8 AP2 blast sounds good, but cover save is very easy to access, while against maulerfiend, only inv save can be taken which is far rare than cover saves.

I always take two Maulerfiends. One runs with my Nurgle Daemon Prince with the Black Mace, the other runs with my Khorne Biker Lord with the Axe of Blind Fury.
I find the lasher tendrils help out a lot from preventing a killy space marine lord from splatting my HQ's all over the pavement.
Also, now that you can only use one grenade in combat they are actually useful at tying up blobs.

If you want to take a forgefiend, look at the "Daemon Engine Pack" formation from the black legion book.
You can give one forgefiend per turn BS 5. That greatly increases the damage output of the dakkafiend.
Edit : Is it possible to use magnets to let you swap out what you want them to be equipped with?

Maulerfiends are good so long as you don't expect them to really ever kill anything. WS3 and a moderately low amount of attacks makes it difficult for them to finish off enemy units in assault, especially infantry, and AV12 makes them very easy to glance to death.
On the other hand they're walkers that are fast as hell. This makes them excellent for running up the board and soaking up fire.

If your Dreadnought is a post 7th Edition SM codex Ironclad Dreadnought with PF and Sesmic Hammer, then it is your opponent who chose the wrong target. 5 base attacks WS4 S10 AP1 that strike before the Maulerfiend is dangerous, as theprobability for the Ironclad to explode the Maulerfiend in one round is expect to be 40% ! That is not even counting the probability of tear down 3HPs at I4 step.
Against other Dreadnoughts, the Maulerfiend should stand a fair chance when it charges, as they are mostly 4 attacks base and only AP 2 so that the Maulerfiend (with its innate 5++) is likely to survive till it strikes, and with 4 attacks S10 AP2 and the bouns melta bomb hit it is quite likely to destroy its opponent

I run Daemonkin and in my 1850 List I run 5. They are amazing in numbers. Most people cannot deal with that much armor moving that fast all at once. The Target saturation makes them scary, i run a D Thirster as well as a unit of Spawn with a Jugger Lord. Most of the time my opponents worry about the Thrister and the Lord. The Mauler fiends crash in 2 turn and wreck things. Even Knights, 2 on a Knight with Lasher endrils takes it down Every time. I usually lose one but it is worth it!

I love them, usually 2+ is the way to go. I like the lashers if I have the points but if not save the 10 points and just run them up the board. Your opponent has to deal with them.

Went against this list at adepticon with sisters of battle. I had 40 scouting melta shots plus a skyhammer with 4grav cannons and 2 melta 2 lascannons.
Bloodiest game I ever played(Because I got seized on)

I have played forgefiend with 3 ectoplasmacannons in small games and they just wreck everything.
Deepstriking terminators got ganked so hard, all 5 died in one round of shooting. I got 15 str 8 ap 2 shots on them hehe.
Can also kill meq like a hot knife in butter.
In smaller games there are usually less av and you can stay in cover or out of sight.
It also looks so much cooler without the dinosaur head.
