Hi Dakka,
so, you are investing a lot of money and time in your (favourite) hobby where there is only war, but what part do you enjoy the most ?
And I have a second question: what do you prefer between the background, the game and the minis ?
Personnally, I love to assemble my minis, as it give them life. They became true models when they were just piles of bitz, and it involve creativity.
But I can't say that I prefer something, it is all part of the Hobby.

I prefer to assemble armies in keeping with the fluff and play games with them. I'm not too keen on the painting side but I don't like fielding non painted stuff so I just get on with it.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Buying models does nothing for me, and I loathe painting. Other than that, I love all of it. Collecting, building, playing, theorizing, reading. All great.

I really really enjoy building and converting the models. I find I also spend a lot of my free time figuring out new lists and armies that I will probably never actually do due to cost and space. I don't know why, but I am always working on a new list and a new themed army to get inspired about.

The gaming elements (playing the game and building lists) as welll as learning he background stuff, reading the books, and participating on this forum. Those have got to bs the bsst aspects od the hobby for me. They're the fun and, IMO, amng the easiest elements of the hobby.

Buying, building and reading the lore. Painting is a necessary evil and I suck at playing the game.

It’s hard to pick a favorite thing.
Gaming is my only real social output. I’m an at-home dad, so don’t have coworkers. Chatting about 40k here with you guys makes up the bulk of my interactions with the world.
The background is a huge part of 40k. I didn’t check the "Reading background (books, wikia, etc....)” box though. While I have read some of the BL books, they are mediocre at best. And some of the newer fluff is not good. But I like the concept of the 40k universe more some times then what GW is doing with it these days.
Due to the problems with getting to the FLGS, I spend more time thinking about my next list the actually pushing it across the table. Good thing I enjoy that part of the game. Thinking of a concept, how to put it together to cover all the bases, etc. I also get to scratch this itch by helping out others in the army list section here.
I like buying models only in the sense that I can’t have them to assemble/paint/use without this step.
I like building more then painting, and playing more then building. But I do enjoy all of steps of getting a mini from the box to the table.
The game might not be perfect, but it can be fun when played with like minded people. If I didn’t enjoy playing, I’d have dropped the hobby years ago. There are enough things competing for my hobby time and budget that minis for a game I don’t play are not an option.
