I'm looking to start collecting space wolves. Mainly as I'm really after an army that specialises in close combat. Currently looking at options on what to include and obviously one of the best units for this would be the wulfen.

Currently thinking of including a murder pack with the following options...

2 squads of 5: each with a leader with frost claws, 2x frost claws & 2 launchers & 2x thunder hammer and storm sheid

A couple of things.

1. If running two units is it the right tactics to have two identical units or should I customise them for different roles?

2. How on earth do I deploy them? They will lose there benefits if they are in a transport. Advantage and disadvantages to a footslogger unit? Stormwolf unit? Drop pod unit????

Thanks in advance!

Fort Benning, Georgia

1. Claws on leader, 2 axes, 2 thunder hammer storm shields on any and all Wulfen units.

2. Behind cover, using your double move or 3" bonus and run and charge to mitigate the amount of time they are in the open.

3. Point at unit you want dead, roll some dice, have enemy remove his models. Rinse and repeat.

yeah, making a Star with these guys as the core, adding IC's that are oh-so-tastey from the Wolves codex... yeah, throw in some Libby's for invis if you wanna be *that guy*

I agree with the dual SS and Great Axes. S8 AP2 at i5 means SO MUCH to taking out what most other units cannot. SS's allows you to take a punch even from Kniggits. yeah, I usually wipe a Kniggit with survivors. I however don't pay for the leader, and just roll with 3 axes.

I pod them in. Put them in ruins. Star them, even, to keep them more survivable. However, don't put tooo many points into these guys, as you'll wanna be sure to have your opponent facing -many- things simultaneously.

IMO, -ENSURE- they reach CC by whatever preferred method you choose. but once they land, count them as a spent grenade, which if survive to *reach* CC again, is icing on the cake. They do enough already, i never count on them hitting again, but man if they do - and they do manage it at times - they HURT.

i go i5 because their special rule allows them to strike yet again before falling. Sometimes if the math is right I'll let one die instead of rolling on the SS, so that I'll get 5 more attacks with s8 AP2 and wipe their squad lol. I've managed to have a Hammer of Wrath (i10 step) nail one, and it managed to kill 3 bikers before anything else happened lol.

However, running a murderpack just seems so expensive.
like, running an HQ laden Terminator squad mounted on a Land Raider kind of expensive.
Meh, I enjoy what a single pack can do - and field other threats.

if you find it worth your time, here's a list i've been cooking up for a while now. Not 'pro' or nothing, but i've got some 150 models and played many variations, and this is the best i've been able to come with to date:

also, TWC are nice - I do Wolf Claws, with SS's on the characters. load them lightly, but do load them. they'll always prove a use. Adding an Iron Priest w/ some pupps is NICE.

Happy Wargaming =)
