I bought Betrayal at Calth a few months ago and since then have been slowly assembling and painting marines. I'm now at the point where I'm beginning to think about designing a starter list to build and play with. While I'm not a competitive player and will largely be building the army out of things I think are cool and fun, I also don't want to end up handicapping myself with glaringly poor army design.
From looking at other peoples' lists online, it seems that the majority of 2k Salamander forces are some variation of: Vulkan with firedrakes in a spartan, two units of tacticals in rhinos, a flamer support squad in a rhino, a support contemptor, and then random things to fill points. As awesome as Vulkan and firedrakes both are, it doesn't look like it would be a fun list to play. Regardless, what I take away from the lists is that, 1) firedrakes and spartans are amazing, 2) salamanders are slow as gak. With that in mind... Can salamanders be played as infantry heavy footsloggers despite their nocturnean slowness? What would be advised if going with infantry heavy?
The follow up to that question is in regards to the legion's unique units. Both firedrakes and pyroclasts are geared towards melee/close-range, respectively, and would seem ineffective without transport. Adding to that, both of them only have landraiders as dedicated transports, making it difficult to avoid turning them into deathstars. Does
HH lean inherently towards deathstar units? Would it be foolish to field either of those units on foot?
I'll leave at that to start with. Thanks for reading!
