I'm trying decide between the Quad Gun upgrade for my ADL or a separate Hydra Platform.

The platform obviously suffers from the drawback of being a 2HP at AV10, but it's also going to be behind the ADL and could have camo giving it 3+ cover save. Part of the question then is: how many of the Ignores Cover weapons are also good choices for taking out light vehicles?

However, the platform doesn't require me to set some other model to firing it.

The only good choice I can think of for who to have firing a Quad Gun would be the enginseer, but then it's got three different things it can do in the shooting phase and I'm diluting it's abilities. Can the servitors fire the gun? If so, they'd not suffer the problem of needing split fire?

The way I've fielded the Quad Gun so far is with my Company Command Squad, but I'd rather not dual-task that unit since it makes a piss poor dedicated AA unit, and otherwise I need to keep using the Split Fire Order.

Thanks,

A Special Weapons Team could serve as your gun crew. 45 points with three flamers/grenade launchers, they can crew the gun, and if an enemy deepstriking unit gets too close for comfort you'll have three flamers/grenade launchers to meet them.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

What are your options for a reasonable BS for relatively few points? If you can get BS 4 or 5 without breaking the bank, you'll add value to the weapon.

Where are you getting those stats for the Hydra? Or do you mean the Aeronautic Hydra platform?

The Big Deal with the quad gun is that it has interceptor, which, the game being the way it is, is vastly more useful to get as it means you're vastly more likely, especially with a quad gun, to cause damage to the thing which will wipe you out.

The other Big Deal is that the quad gun can take IG orders, i.e. ignores cover or tank/monster hunter, wheras the hydra needs the whole emprah's wrath formation to be able to do that.

It may also be worth looking at the Icarus lascannon as a nice middle ground, as AP2 makes a huge difference in AA situations.

Also keep in mind you can take 1-n command squads now and remain battleforged with the cadian formation, so self ordering crew with flat bs4, and maybe a flakk missile launcher in 3+ cover would probably deal with equivalent points of flyers quite easily.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

ADL with quad every time, because of how the gun emplacement rules work with Interceptor.

The Interceptor rule says (paraphrasing): A weapon with this rule may be fired at a unit that arrives from reserves in the enemy Movement phase. this WEAPON cannot be used again in the following shooting phase, but if the model has another weapon, that may be used."

The gun emplacement rule is effectively "a model within X" of the gun may count as firing that gun with his ballistic skill."

So you take your friendly neighborhood Vindicare Assassin, plop him behind the ADL where he'll be nice and cozy-safe with Stealth, and when an enemy flyer shows up (or anyone comes out of reserves you feel like shooting, really, there's no reason not to use it) you get a BS8 or 7 or whatever he is quad-gun, then you can still use his Exitus rifle in your shooting phase. Everybody wins! (well, you win.)

After our game, I remembered this little trick, and I had to check the rules to see if it still worked, but it does seem to with the way the Interceptor rule works!

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Thanks all. After last night's first game with the Hydra platform I am convinced of the preference for the ADL Quad Gun approach.

I'm not likely to keep fielding a Vindicare, it has underperformed so much in my games so far that I don't think it's justifiable just to shoot the Quad Gun at BS 8.
