I'm starting a SM force aesthetically inspired by the Brotherhood of Steel from Fallout 4. Basically my idea is silver marines a ton of weathering and rust effects. How would I start doing this (never done it before), and are there any good tutorials online.

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.

Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.

And he will hold the line.

look up weathering and rust effects on youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMK_lZFYbv8

just one of a long list, miniature painting 101 is a good channel

I'm pretty sure Warhammer TV also has some tutorials they've posted on youtube, but I've not got a link handy

GW makes some great rust stuff, ryza rust a dry brush paint, and typhus corrosion, a technical paint, those right there, after you paint your model will give you a good weathered look on steel types.

Also check out videos or tips on chipping effects, can do that with a chipping medium (also hairspray technique) but really for an infantry model I'd almost just say it'd be easier to paint on chips.

Anyway hopefully that's enough to get you started.

Good luck!

And build lots of steel barricades, wrecked vehicles and building scenery - that will give you something to practise on.

Rusty metal is really, really simple.

Paint entirely in a gunmetal grey.

Stipple with brown (use a crappy old brush / or drybrush. Something with the tip splayed).

Stipple very sparingly with bright orange.

Brown wash.

Black wash (for darker / greasy metal).

Drybrush gently with the gunmetal again. More drybrush for more polish.

Do edges in a brighter metal (silver / steel).

Chips and scratches with very fine lines of that, deeper gouges with a thin black line 'above'.

Exactly the method done here:

There are plenty of sources of how-to weathering guides but the majority are for larger models such as vehicles, buildings, etc.

The one below is specifically for Space Marines and may be more helpful.

Ok awesome, thanks for the help! Doesn't look as difficult as I initially thought

I will also note that if you're looking for heavy rust, you can use the two new Technical Paints from GW: Typhus Corrosion & Ryza Rust.

You apply the Typhus corrosion first to the area you want to be rusted looking, allow it to dry, and the drybrush the Ryza Rust over the Typhus Corrosion. Ink wash around the edges if you wish.

You get the following results (The rusted metal was painted as detailed above).:

Best of luck and I hope this helps. Take it easy.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.
