I have begun making an alpha legion list, and am wondering what normally legion specific unit you all think would be ideal?

Firedakes are great - you get the 2 wound termies with TH/SS, and the champion can take an alpha legion power dagger for +1 attack.

Why must I always choose beween certain death and probable death.

Fulmentarus terminators or Tyrant Siege terminators.

It really depends on what you need for your army. The Iron Warrior's terminators or Havocs are usually popular choices.

Fire Drakes or Tyrant Siege terminators seem to be popular choices. One is crazy 2 wound TH/SS termies. The other is a Termy unit that can put out a crazy number of krak missiles. So it comes down to if you want a shooty or choppy unit.

I believe you can steal the Iron Circle, but due to how the rules work you can't attach a charater to them like the proper Iron Warriors. (Their rules say that character has to be a Iron Warrior's character, and nothing about the alpha legion's RoW overwrites that.)

Tyrants are pretty strong, now that they're heavies though they may take up a slot of something important. Still, even as heavies the implacable advance is really nice.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

Whatever one you like the fluff/look of. Really, IMO that's probably one of the better ways to list build for 30k. as for effectiveness, it all depends on what your army lacks.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

It doesnt matter what spot they take up in the legion foc if the Alpha Legion steal them they are Elites. so Tyrants and Havocs become Elites if used by the Alpha legion in the ROW same as any other legion specific unit.

This is actually something I wantto ask for fluff.
How did they get these special units? Did they convince them to side with them? Are they pretending to be part of the legion?
Are they painted legion colors?
Cause Iron Circe is Alpha legion colors look bad ass.

I think it's supose to be like the Alpha legion guys who tried to kill gullieman in unremembered empire. Bassicly they killed the guys who originaly owned the war gear and are now wearing it. So if they keep it in the original colors or painted in alpha legion is realy up to you, TBH. It counts on if you feel they would be trying to pass themselves off as the original owners like in unremembered empire, or if they are openly being alpha legion.

In the case of other traitor legions, technically they could of just stole the wargear from their allies. But them secretly killing their allies for the wargear is just as likely.

Also space marines where not all ATSKNF indocternated IIRC

almost all of them had splits in there own legions.

seems it would be simple enough for agents to get them to join or miss direct them to doing a thing.

probably MUCH harder to do in 40k.

Yah, painting them in alpha legion colors or their original legion colours seem to me like it comes down to what narrative you want to tell with the unit.

Terminators:
Red Butchers for offensive melee terminator unit.
Fire Drakes for defensive melee terminator unit.
Justaerin for melee and shooting terminator unit (everyone loves these, but I feel they are diminished by losing Sons of Horus Legionnaire rules... no re-rolling reserves, no BS5 special weapons, no extra swings from merciless fighters).
Siege Tyrants for super shooting terminator unit (my favorite).

Non-bulky:
Suzerain for extremely potent anti-elites melee unit (my favorite).
Mor Deythan for a brutal special weapon unit that scores.
Iron Havoks for the best devastator marines in the game.
Terror Squads for infantry blenders extraordinaire.

no one have mentioned them, but both DG specials are really strong as well:

deathshroud for their I: 3 power scythes, LD: 10, everyone being a character, 2-termi starting size, and joyous 2-wounds for 10 points over a standard termiantor.
Grave Warden for their ability to completely screw over any unit that relies on charge bonuses (forced disorganized charges), being the only cataphractii unit with overwatch (only a single flamer), a free poison 3+ flamer, AMAZING shooting weapon, and all for the same price as p. fist terminators.

I havent ran this RoW before, if/when I do I will be looking for a unit that fills whatever gap I have in the list and fills it well, I suspect it will be one of the iron warriors units as atm I am light on firepower in my armies in general.
No point taking something that alpha legion can already do better/just as well.

I would recommend the Siege Termies.

On another note, are the Alpha Legion Termies any good? The Lerneaen?

War Coven of the Coruscating Gaze ~3000pts

Thereis one problem, the termies WILL need a dedicated transport.

I don't find that termies always NEED transports, unless you honestly give your opponent no other larger threats (a non-issue in an AL list).

No,they do. The ROW states that units that cannot
Ifiltrate, Deepstrike or have a dedicated transport.
Tyrant seige terminators cannot do either of the first two, so they have to the second.

Is this with a RoW or something like it? Looking at my Betrayal copy, termies are able to foot-slog.

Yup, its one of the restrictions of thr ROW Coils of the Hydra, the same ROW that lets you take another legion specific unit.

coils gives the 'stolen' units LA: alpha legion, as such, if you choose infiltrate as your tactic, they can foot slog just fine, unless I've misread the rule in the past.

See here is the problem me and my friend found.
Mutable Tactics takes place when you select warlord traits.
The ROW explicitly says they cannot be selected if they do not have one of those 3.

you may be looking to deeply into the rule While initially true, the infantry squads can gain infiltrate, thus satisfying the requirement. If you're honestly not sure, email forgeworld, but this is one of those cases, where it's quite possible only you and your buddy (/your game group) rule it that way.

true, which was my big problem with the ROW: without transports, it makes your army fairly predicable when you use the RoW, taking away one of the XX Legion's buffs.

I would say (as an AL player) to steal...
Grave Wardens
Iron Circle
Fulmentarus Terminators with CML
Iron Havocs with Lascannons
Mhara Gal Tainted Dreadnought with 2x Fists or Plasma Cannon (Yes you can do this)
Iron Circle (yes you can do this)
Mor Deythan (you can also take a Darkwing Storm Eagle as they can take it as a DT)
Firedrakes with SS

Can you Transport MC's in a Transport?
Iron Circle count as AL units for all purposes...

I would almost always take infiltrate or scout as AL anyway so it doesnt matter whether they have a transport or not.
