Hello,
I am looking to get a small Grey Knights army for 40K, maybe about 1500 points.

I like the aesthetics of a small model count army, but do not know where to start. What would you recommend for a general, well rounded and affordable list. Also what rule books, Codex's, Supplements, and other rule-Micro Transactions would be needed to run this?

I would prefer if it was all Grey Knights with no allies, if that is possible.
If there are more affordable alternative models that would work in in place, I am open to those as well.

The community that I would be playing in is not a tournament scene and does not play with Cheesy Lists all that often.

Thank You for your help.

I'd try and get a few games in at 750pts to get a feel for the army before committing to spending more.

I'd buy to make a 'standard' 750pt list :-
GK Codex
Terminator Box
Power Armour Box
Dreadknight Box
Librarian (or second Terminator box to kitbash Librarian)

Libarian for your HQ is always a good choice
Terminators for your troops (fit as many psycannons as you can)
Dreadknights for your Heay Support (personally I like giving them the works with psycannon, incinerator, sword, and teleporter).
For Elites you want to take Purifiers in a Rhino to get them in close for their cleansing flames and to burn things with their incinerators.
Fast Attack is going to be Interceptors as their mobility is quite impressive. Using their shunt move to get a precise positioning for your incinerators can really rack up some heavy wounds.

Strikes, Paladins, Purgation, Dreadnoughts, and most of the other HQs are of dubious value and tend to be fairly impractical.

I'd snag a Libby, Terminator Squad and a dreadknight.

technicly that's a legal list by itself and should clock in at

~140 points for the Libby
~185 points for the termy squad
~220 for the Dreadknight

for an approximate point list of 545 points as a Nemisis strike force. should be simple eneugh to plug into a current armies as allies.

From there I'd grab another dreadknight and then fill up with GKTs.
maybe toss in another Librarian and Dragio if you're wanting some Idependant characters

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

At 1500 points, my GK list has a Libby, 10 GKTs, 10 Interceptors, 2 DreadKnights, and Draigo. It's a very fast list with Jump, Shunt, and Gate, intended to win Maelstrom. Been playing it for years, does quite well.

Generally you want your librarian upgraded to mastery level 3

Your terminators should always upgrade their weapons (within allowance) for psycannons and you'll want one daemon hammer as well

Dreadknights should always always take the personal teleporter and a melee upgrade. Take ranges weapons to taste though the h Psilncer which wasn't great before is in a bit of limbo with recent FAQ saying ml=# of casts which means dreadknights have to choose between force and 4++

In larger games you could ally with SW. This would give you access to a Drop Pod as FA choice. Give this Pod to a 10 men unit of Purifiers. With their built-in psychic power you can do a lot of damage upon arrival of the Pod and combat squadding the Purifiers (giving the power twice).

With the new FAQ (albeit on 1st draft), this does not work. BB cannot start in another factions transports.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

A bit of a buying tip: if you ever need Power Armored Grey Knights (Purifiers for example) buy the 10-man Strike Box. It has the exact same contents as the other Grey Knight Power Armor boxes, but twice the amount for a 10 dollar discount. And you'll never want *just* 5 knights, so it's always a better buy.

Also, don't bother with the Librarian model GW offers. You can convert a much better looking librarian by getting creative with the Terminator Box.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
