Just a little confused on how you make your warlord selection. So if I am taking a necron decurion and I have 2 hq choices, 1 in a reclamation legion and 1 in a destroyer cult, can either one be declared my warlord? Or does my warlord have to come from the core detachment and not an auxilary detachment. I am asking since I would much prefer my warlord to be the destroyer lord over the overlord from the reclamation legion but I am not sure if it's legal to do so since the destroyer cult is a auxiliary formation under the decurion detachment.

Sorry if this is really obvious I am just not sure how choosing your warlord is affected by formations.

When you make your army, you choose any character in the army (does not have to be an HQ), to be your Warlord. Note that depending on where you take your Warlord from, and what you choose can impact bonuses in the game.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Alright, thank you for the quick response. That clears that up.

Just a side note, the Destroyer Cult and Reclamation Legion formations are part of the same Detachment if they're in a Decurion Detachment. So taking the Destroyer Lord as your warlord still means that the entire Decurion Detachment is your Primary Detachment. The auxilary formations are not detachments on their own if they're part of a Decurion.

There's another catch: you Warlord can never come from an Allied Detachment. Of course, this limitation has no weight if you only use the Decurion.

Also, the detachment your Warlord is becomes your Primary Detachment.
