Will somebody explain to me what a 4++ save is? I understand that you get a 3+ armor then a 4+ invul. What does the extra + mean? This example is based on a Decurion necron overlord with a phase shifter.

3+/4++ would mean a regular 3+ save and a 4+ invuln save. In 40k though you only ever get to make 1 save - not a 3+ but also a 4+ if you fail that (though I believe warhammer fantasy used to work like that, would need to verify)

It's just short hand for an invulnerable save.

Okay. Well I guess some of the confusion is that this particular overlord already has a 4+ invulnerable. But with the phase shifter it becomes a 4++ invulnerable.

The general notation for saves is:

3+ one plus for an armor save
4++ two plusses for a invulnerable save (sometimes for cover as well)
5+++ Three plusses is sometimes used for a Feel No Pain save, but is a less common standard.

probably just a victim of shorthand or a typo. Generally speaking, '+' is armour, '++' is invulnerable save, and '+++' is anything from FNP, to innate cover saves, to resurrection protocols and beyond.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Okay. Thanks for the explanation.

Yup, that's how saves work in WHFB (up to 8th ed, and including all the variants of that since AoS went splat).

Armour saves (if you get them - certain weapons/attacks deny ALL armour saves, some just modify it so that you don't get one), the ward saves (the magical attacks save) if you get them. Re-rolls will apply to either/both if you have them, too.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
