This character is going to be the leader of my Blood Angels. He has no back story atm but I envision him to be a reckless librarian that is quick to abandon the subtleties of the arcane in favour of the complete brutality of a powerfist. (Yes I am aware that libs cant use powerfists) He is sanguinary guard themed and will attach to a squad of sanguinary guard.

I'm not sure what to do with the base. Anyone got any ideas?

Mistakes made on this model...

1. I wasn't able to quite figure out how to get vallejo liquid gold to apply as smoothly as I had hoped. The armour has some bits or crumbs on it that I suppose look acceptable (worn armour?) but I did not intend for it. I used a size 2 brush to apply the gold. Would a smaller brush work better?

2. I didnt really plan out the two books. The colour schemes on those don';t do it for me. Would colours could I have used on those parts?

All told... I like him. He looks hungry for martial glory.

Looks pretty good to me. As long as you enjoy how he looks, that is what matters.

For the books, look up some old books and how the covers look, and see if you find one that you feel fits what you are wanting him to have. Something else, get a Micron pen, and just add some writing or some lines of print, so its not a blank book, but one that he is reading to call down the wrath of the Emperor. Can also do the same on the purity seals as well.

Personally I think he looks too much like a regular Sanguinary Guard member, but it's your model so whatever pleases you. Very librarian-esque with LOOK AT THIS BOOK going on.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Can a micron pen be used on top of varnish? Do they come in red?

I believe they can be used over varnish, not sure though, since I haven't done it over a varnish. They do come in red.

I was aiming for that!

I was thinking about adding a blood/gore effect on the book with a demon head on the base... presumably beaten to death with the book. I'm not too confident in my abilities to pull this off.

You got to use alcohol to thin down vallejo liquid metals in order to get smooth coverage. Also you got to have a good pace when painting with them as it dries much faster.

Have you now? That's good to know. I've been having a nightmare over doing all my Khorne brass edging with their tinny tin / brassy brass. Will give that a try, thanks.

No, only use alcohol for their liquid metal range which are alcohol base paints like Old Gold. If you use it on tinny tin it will clump up the paint.
Vallejo metallics do have some problems in coverage particularly tinny tin and brassy brass. You could try their air range metallics as they do have better coverage.

Seconded ...just a little blue somewhere, maybe just the hand holding the book? Yeah the Liquid Gold is nice but just soo much of a pain to deal with I stopped using it. Any bit of water on your brush will ruin the job and likely ruin the entire paint-pot.

In either case he still looks really good!

I think my work time using the liquid gold was perhaps too slow. I had alcohol on hand for thinning but i kept getting crumbs i had to deal with. The basecoat took maybe 20 mins of messy around. I want model air gold but no stores in my area have it :<

Blue... hmm. I had been avoiding that colour because every time I see a librarian with red/whtie/blue I think of this...

Im sure Chuck is space marine material but he doesnt quite conjure up the right image.

Would a really light blue work? Like sky blue on the book ribbon or even the purity seals ?

You need to thin the Vallejo Gold with some Paint Thinner. That stuff gets really globbie and dries so fast. You also need to shake and possibly mix with a mini paint stirrer for at least 5 minutes.

Consider adding a coat of Gloss Varnish to the golden armor areas.

Green/Blue contrasts Red/Gold on the color wheel so you may get some nice visual contrast with the piece for the base color.
