Hi all,

I've been working on test models as of late for both Salamanders and Death Guard, as I intend to make both of these armies in parallel... despite my better judgement. I feel like putting them together so I can make interesting dioramas, and lists that put each of the armies on the opposite sides of the Heresy. It will also allow me to play games with some of my friends who don't really collect.

Anyways, with that in mind I've been making a whole lot of lists for fun and I decided to make a 2000pts list for each army, that I can use in a game that pits them against each other. It will be a good opportunity for me to get an idea of what I want to start building, as I have a lot of limited edition characters (and FW HH characters, including both primarchs) bought and waiting to be painted.

Keeping in mind that I don't intend for these armies to win any tournaments, it's just a good starting point for each force, and will hopefully come across as fluffy as to the lore of each Legion, while not being completely useless.

# Death Guard (2000pts) #
HQ
* Calas Typhon (200pts)
* Deathshroud Terminator Squad (270pts)
Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod, 4x Deathshroud Terminators

Troops
* Legion Tactical Squad (250pts)
Legion Tactical Sergeant, 19x Legion Tactical Space Marines

* Legion Tactical Support Squad (325pts)
Legion Sergeant, 9x Legion Space Marines, Plasma Guns

Elites
* Apothecarion Detachment (140pts)
2x Apothecary, 1x Apothecary with Augury Scanner (one in each troop choice, augury in heavy weapon squad)

* Legion Rapier Weapons Battery (120pts)
* 2x Quad Mortar ('Thud Gun')

Heavy Support
* Grave Warden Terminator Squad (215pts)
Chainfist, 4x Grave Warden Terminator, Heavy Flamer with Chem-munitions, Chem-master with Power Scythe

* Legion Medusa (170pts)
Hunter-killer Missile, Twin-Linked Bolter

* Legion Heavy Support Squad (310pts)
Hardened Armour, Legion Sergeant, 9x Legion Space Marines, Missile Launchers

# Salamanders (2000pts) #
HQ
* Legion Praetor (100pts)
Artificer Armour, Master of the Legion

Troops
* Legion Breacher Siege Squad (225pts)
Legion Breacher Siege Sergeant, 9x Legion Breacher Siege Space Marines

* Legion Tactical Squad (255pts)
17x Legion Tactical Space Marines, Legion Vexilla, Nuncio-Vox, Sergeant Artificer Weapons

Elites
* Contemptor-Cortus Dreadnought Talon (230pts)
DCCW, Chainfist, 2x Graviton Gun, Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod

* Contemptor-Cortus Dreadnought Talon (230pts)
DCCW, Chainfist, 2x Graviton Gun, Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod

* Firedrake Terminator Squad (450pts)
Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod, 4x Dragonscale Storm Shield, 4x Firedrakes, 4x Thunder Hammer
Seargent: Dragonscale Storm Shield, Master-crafted Thunder Hammer

* Legion Rapier Weapons Battery (180pts)
* 3x Quad Mortar ('Thud Gun')

Fast Attack
* Legion Outrider Squad (180pts)
3x Legion Space Marine Outrider, Outrider Sergeant, Twin-linked Plasma Guns

* Legion Outrider Squad (150pts)
3x Legion Space Marine Outrider, Melta Bombs, Twin-linked Flamer

I have considered removing one of the outrider squads, and the Praetor, and replacing with Dracos (modelled using the forgeworld Salamanders Contemptor, which will be the only Salamanders Contemptor I will model, so he will look really unique)... But I'm not sure if this will look silly, or if it will be less competitive etc.

Any thoughts feel free to let me know! Any input is welcome

can't say too to much about salamanders, but as for the DG:

1) Fluffwise, DW weren't fond of plasma, volkite, and other such 'non-durable' weaponry. While DG could deep strike at times, I wouldn't rely on that drop pod especially since one of the better ROWs we can take bans deepstrike. Beyond that, the DG list is actually not playable since you only have 1 troop that fill the compulsory slot in your list, were it me, I'd take another 20-man tactical squad and ditch the drop pod.

2) the salamander list has the praetor (a pretty damn amazing beatstick character) wasted imo, and has a whole lot of fast units for a legion who have a "run" banning RoW which also requires more troops than HS+FA choices (said RoW also bans deepstrike), and are basically DG but slightly worse (not a bad thing, it's just kinda how the rules are splayed out)

All in all, they look like once the DG one is legal, to be okay lists, if not really the most fluffy.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Thanks for the feedback!

1) I suppose that's a very good point. I hadn't really looked at any ROW stuff just yet, as I'm trying to keep things "general" so that I can change play styles, and keep things fresh, but I suppose the whole point of such a themed Legion is that they do play a certain way. Reaping does look really good, as well as Creeping Death, and I saw that you had posted a list involving that some time ago... So I'm working on a list right now that is somewhat based off that list, but including more of the units I prefer.

I see what you mean by the drop pod point. How do you mitigate the issue of getting Typhon and his unit across the table, and into close combat, where the excel? A spartan is the obvious choice but the points cost is prohibitive.

2) I have been lacking in really examining the playstyles in incorporating HQ into units, with the exception of heavy hitters with heavy hitting terminator squads, which are rather straight forward... I think I would definitely swap out the Praetor/Outriders for Dracos, which would also improve the Contemptor theme going on with the list, as well as giving me an excuse for buying the Salamanders Contemptor... Though because he is not a Master of the Legion, I would need another HQ in order to get a RoW.

Again, I'll have to look at the RoW's available to Salamanders and try and edit my list accordingly

Seeing as Pyroclasts can be taken as non compulsory troops with the Salamanders RoW, that might be a nice option, by throwing them into some armour and trying to get them into an aggressive stance early game. At almost 300pts per 10-man squad, however (before adding transport), this could be tricky.

Lots to think about, thanks!
