Subject: ObSec in formations?

Am I right in thinking troops that are taken as a part of a formation are not Objective Secured? Lookin at the Helcult for fearless troops but that may negate my reason for taking them in the first place - holding objectives

No you are wrong. All detachments including formations only have give objective secured to certain units or models in them if they specificly mention this. You don't need to be troop to be objsc you need to be in a detachment that makes your kind of unit objsc. There are a few non CAD detachments that have these sorts of rules but most don't have it. Automatically Appended Next Post: For example the "air superiority detachment" gives fliers Obsc while most formations that include troops don't give it at all.

Partially; they don't have ObSec, but they are scoring.

You can still take the helcult and then wagon wheel the objective, remember your opponent has to get within 3 inches of it to contest and can't get within 1 inch without charging.

The alternative to ObSec is enough damage output in any phase to just wash your opponent's ObSec units off the objectives. If your formation provides that, it might be a reasonable trade.

As others have said, formation units do not have Obsec unless the formation rules grant them it. I've seen this overlooked, and it's why formations like the IG's Emperor's Blade Assault Company are really nice.
