I must preface this by saying I do not run Space marines often but I have my old white scars army I ran as a combined arms detachment. Now I have the white scars rules and have a hunting force built, with a 10th company auxiliary.
It includes:
A captain on a bike
3 bike squads of various sizes
1 scout bike squad
1 attack bike squad
Auxiliary: 10th company strike force
3 units of scouts (2 with landspeeder storms)

Here is my issue; My librarian is left out. Do I have it correct in looking at the force org chart in the SM book that the only way to include a librarian is to buy a conclave of 3=5? No other force chart in the SM book lists a librarian. I know I can buy him as part of the combined arms or allied detachment, but I have no tac squads (bikes counted as troops before, but now, since my captain on bike is in the Hunting force detachment (scarblade strike force detachment to be technical) they will NOT count as troops in my combined or allied detachment (it says under the bike squad entry in SM that they count as troops in a detachment led by a character on a bike).
The rest of my army consists of:
Vanguard Veterans (elite) (Librarian usually joins them)
A venerable Drqdnaught (elite)
10 Assault Marines (fast)
5 Devastators (Heavy)
To use these, I need a combined arms, so would need two tac squads (or two more scouts (my three scout squads are in my 10th company auxiliary)

So does anyone have a solution besides adding the tac squads? Maybe someone sees a way to switch to a different auxiliary for the primary and then I can use the scouts as my troops? (fitting the vanguards, assault marines, devestators, and dreads in an auxiliary seems impossible, as Devestators and Assault marines do not fit into ANY auxiliary chart in the SM book (which seems ridiculous...))
I have toyed with breaking my Vanguard Veterans into 2 units of 5, converting the plain assault marines into a unit of vanguard veterans (ouch on points), and calling them a first company task force as my auxiliary. This frees my scouts and solves my problem I guess, but costs me bodies in my assault squad. (My assault squad is 10 models so 170, so I would end up with 7 Vanguard veterans)

Anyway, just give me some ideas and thoughts please.

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

Your options are:

1. Run the librarian as an HQ in a CAD.
2. Bring a librarius conclave
3. Go unbound.

Actually I now realize the librarian conclave is pointless for me. Yes its an auxiliary, but I still need the CAD to get the dreads, vanguards, and assault marines. Since my core is a hunting force, I must take a CAD or Allied Detachment to include any assault marines or dreads. Or am I missing something?
I think I'm stuck with the vanguard veterans as first company strikeforce, if I don't want to lose any of the other models for troops. I want to run the White Scars bonuses, so unbound is out since ALL models must be part of a detachment. Blech.

I like to run mine as my HQ so I'm a CAD fan boy and hope it never goes away. Hate how restrictive formations are.

If you put your librarian on a bike, he can take bikes as troops for the CAD.

As the min 5 man for troop rule was removed, you might be able to re-jigger your list to free up some bikes to escort him in the CAD.

This is the trade off with formations (when they're well designed, at least). There are restrictions to balance the bonuses.

Take a CAD with a Librarian on a Bike. That satisfies the Bike troops requirement.

Actually, it turns out I'm an idiot. The white scars can take a single scout and single landspeeder as an auxiliary to their scarblade force (Stormbringer squadron). So that freed two scout units to act as troops for my CAD, Problem solved.
