Hey
It's been roughly 15 years since my wife and I have been able to play 40K, for various reasons. We generally used RT with house rules. Played a little 2e but for some reason didn't end up converting over. Bought 3e and 5e rule books, but really just to have them on the shelf, lol. Now our youngest kid is old enough i feel safe bringing the minis out of storage (as long as I keep an eye out).
I'm reading through 7e and collating new data with my rusty memory, just automatically. So, any other Oldhammers: what would you say I most need to be aware of and remember has changed from the archaic RT code of Hammurabi?
Oh, and ya btw: WTH is this heresy I read about overwatch? At some point they got rid of overwatch, and now they use that term to describe snap fire at people charging you. I gotta say it's really disorienting to read overwatch discussions, have to remind myself that none of you are actually talking about overwatch. The old folks know what I mean here, right?
So do any of you still use true Overwatch in the game? If so, what do you call it?
Thx
-Edit-
I'm posting under Proposed Rules mostly because of that speculative question.

You fire snap shots at the first thing that charges you. It needs a lot of fixing so if you have the ideas, throw them out here.

Oh, and just to clarify for anybody that does not happen to know the RT version of Overwatch, it's totally not the same as the current 40K use of the term.
Old school Overwatch is when one of your units foregoes moving, shooting, and assault in order to shoot *during your opponent's next move phase.* Overwatch must be declared at the start of your turn, and that status is lost if something in your turn results in that unit not being able to stay waiting in position, fingers on triggers, for enemies to cross their LOS in range. They can fire at full BS 'cos this is *not* regarded as snap fire. They are on Over ($@&$&) Watch, not firing wildly by reflex.
I can tell you we'll be keeping True Overwatch as a house rule.

I just jumped in this edition, but I think I can still help you. Formations are a big thing now, take select units and don't take others and gain bonuses, pretty simple. Also, the scale is much larger, you've no doubt seen a Knight already, yes those can be used in normal games.
Some armies can be crazy broken, but as long as you're playing with good people it shouldn't be a problem.
Not much else I don't think, and apologies if I sound like I'm talking to you like a baby, I just am not sure of how much you've read the rulebook and know of the current meta.

Well you're a bundle of optimism
It's only a waste of money if you go into this hobby expecting a balanced game. The game as a whole might be unbalanced, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to find balance (or some semblance thereof) within the game.

As long a people realize that they need to put in lots of work/negotiation to get the 40k rules you pay GW plc for , to deliver the game play you might want.
Then at least they do not buy into the expensive 40k rules expecting them to work right out of the book,(Like other rule sets do.)

Why should people have to realize GW or FW cant write balanced rules because their business model is to write broken undercosted rules for the new model kit to push sales?
If I paid $100 for a book the darn thing better be ready to play out of the box not all this crap about ambiguous rules conflict with the main rules and such.
Its like paying for a new car but getting a broken pile or scrap. A late facebook FAQ is not an acceptable fix for me. Too little too late.
Before you cry prejudice, I should never pay a company that treats their customers like gak.

Game is not very good to you if you like vampire space marines but it is very good to you if you are a werewolf space marine. The game is also a lot more friendly to giant robots than tanks. A lot more favorable to heros than their troopers...that about sums up the game right now.
