I'd definitely call the airline and check dimensions for allowable carry-on and compare it to the figure case numbers. Lately, the last few times I've flown, the airlines have been sticklers for not letting people slide if their carry-on is too large. If your case doesn't fit you're going to probably have to check it and I wouldn't check my army on to an airplane in a soft case Especially going transatlantic. That's asking a bit much and if you've ever had a window seat and seen how gently the bags get loaded and unloaded, not to mention what they might get stuck under in the hold, then you know what I'm talking about.
